illa is the former emcee/producer of Native Imports. He is currently based in Miami, FL. His roots in south florida is a surprise too many, as his musical style is heavily sampled based and reminiscent of old school boom bap. illa immerges as a breath of fresh air with his carefully chopped soul sampling laid over hard hitting drums. His musical roots stemmed from influences growing up. As a teen, he received formal music lessons, but it wasn't until accompanying his father in a band that illa began to express his musical creativity. Around the same time, illa was heavily influenced by his older brother, Michael, who immersed illa in legendary hip hop artists like, A Tribe Called Quest, DeLaSoul, Special Ed, Digable Planets, Rakim, NWA, EPMD. Influence from producers such as J. Dilla (RIP), Pete Rock, & 9th Wonder are apparent in many elements of his production style. With an appreciation for a wide range of music (from John Coltrane to Gil Scott Heron) illa has developed an ear for selectively chopping samples.
Illa began writing and creating mixtapes back in High School. However, after moving away to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida, illa linked up with Soco and began writing and recording mixtapes. They both shared a deep appreciation for true hip hop.
