ILLUSTRATIVE 2009 art festival returns to Berlin

Paris, Zurich and now Berlin: ILLUSTRATIVE 2009 will return to the creative capital to celebrate the cutting-edge works of contemporary graphic art for the fifth time around. From the 16th of October to the 1st of November, works ranging from drawing, graphic prints, painting and monumental mural collages to graphically inspired 3D-illustrations, book art and animation will be on show. With more than 60 artists from all across the world, ILLUSTRATIVE brings together an inspiring cornucopia of visual contemporary culture in the Villa Elisabeth located in the heart of Berlin.

ILLUSTRATIVE 2009 showcases an international scene of artist-designers, whose works have been inspired by subculture movements like comic and graffiti as well as by applied arts like illustration and book art. The exhibition explores the merging of infinite materials and techniques in widely unprecedented combinations, which challenge learned ways of seeing – e.g. the latest development, where illustration and graphics are translated into the third dimension, or new narrative strategies in 3D-animation.

Over 60 artists were selected for this year’s exhibition. This includes among others Erik Mark Sandberg (US), Tomer Hanuka (ISR), Olaf Hajek (GER), Diego Lorenzini (CHIL), Christobal Leon (CHIL), Nigel Evan Dennis (USA), Tim Dinter (GER), Roman Bittner (GER), Yoh Nagao (JP), Christian Montenegro (ARG), Jesse Auersalo (FIN), Matt Furie (USA), Siggi Eggertsson (ISL), Jörn Kaspuhl (GER), David O’Reilly (IRL), Lorenzo Petrantoni (IT), Martin Haake (D), Luke Best (GB), Eva Han (KOR), Antti Uotila (FIN), Daniel Stolle (GER), Gregori Saveedra (ES), Pixelgarten (D), Vincent Hui (USA) and Edwin Ushiro (USA).

Swatch Young Illustrators Award

The Swatch Young Illustrators Award exhibition showcases the newest artist generation. The prize annually awards extraordinary new talents, handpicked by an international jury. It encourages and supports illustrators and graphic designers in their personal work and offers them an international platform. Members of the jury include Julius Wiedemann (editor „Illustration Now“), Jessica Helfand (Design Observer), Fernando Galán (art.es), Angharad Lewis (Grafik Magazine), Keiichi Tanaami (Illustrator), Maria Serrano (étapes), Cherie Federico (Aesthetica), Ruben Maurique Diaz (Neo2), Lilit Breddels (Volume Magazine) and Claudia Gerdes (Page).The winners of the Young Illustrators Award 2008 were illustrators Rebecca Manley (GB), Miriam Frei from Switzerland, Christian Montenegro (ARG) as well as Jenny Rope from Finland with her animation work.

Die ILLUSTRATIVE 2009 ist das weltweit einzige Forum für zeitgenössische illustrative Kunst und Grafik. Bereits 4mal fand die Ausstellung statt: Berlin 2006 und 2007, Paris 2007 und Zürich 2008.

Nach Paris und Zürich kommt die ILLUSTRATIVE, das weltweit größte Kunstfestival für zeitgenössische Illustration und Grafik, nach Berlin. Vom 16. Oktober – 1. November 2009 feiert sie zum fünften Mal in Folge die außergewöhnlichsten und renommiertesten Positionen der aktuellen grafischen Kunst. Das Spektrum reicht von Zeichnungen, Druckgrafiken und Malerei bis hin zu monumentalen Wandcollagen, grafisch inspirierten 3D-Installationen, Buchkunst und Animationsfilmen. Mit den Arbeiten von mehr als 60 Künstlern aus aller Welt versammelt die ILLUSTRATIVE in der Villa Elisabeth in Berlin-Mitte wieder eine inspirierende Dichte an visueller Gegenwartskultur.

Anders als die klassische, textgebundene Illustration mischen sich in der zeitgenössischen illustrativen Kunst und Grafik Einflüsse u.a. aus Comic, Graffiti, Mode, Architektur, Set Design für Computerspiele oder auch Animation. Die besondere Sensibilität für das Material, das ausgeprägte handwerkliche Geschick und der Mix aus analogen und digitalen Techniken verleihen der illustrativen Kunst eine spezielle Progressivität, die seit einiger Zeit die Entwicklung der Gegenwartskunst entscheidend mitprägt.

Ergänzt wird die Hauptausstellung durch eine Ausstellung der 20 besten Nachwuchskünstler, die von einem internationalen Kuratorium für den Swatch Young Illustrators Award nominiert wurden. Mit den preisgekrönten Arbeiten zeigt die YIA-Ausstellung die jüngsten Trends und Stile des Genres.

Die ILLUSTRATIVE wurde 2006 von den Kuratoren Pascal Johanssen und Katja Kleiss in Berlin gegründet.
