We're willing to bet that Kurt Buttigieg is the only musician you can think of that calls Malta home. This is gorgeous otherworldly musique concrete. Far away drones, swoops of modulated electronics, keening feedback and speaker rattling low end rumble. Sparse and dynamic, but space-y with tons of reverb. Ethereal melodies are slowly introduced, creating a chillingly intense soundscape that could be the perfect horror movie soundtrack.

Skullcakes (Kurt Buttigieg / Bùtig) is from Malta, a tiny island nation south of Sicily. As Kurt Buttigieg he released a string of haunting albums for small but well-respected underground labels such as Celebrate PSI Phenomenon or Zeromoon and played several live sets - including opening for Otomo Yoshihide and Damo Suzuki, no less.
His new project, Skullcakes, is a raw and beautifully disjointed mix of sparse ambient experimentation, psychedelic drones and microbeats that owe much to bass-heavy hip-hop.
He is based in Brussels, Belgium (but also spends time in Malta and Berlin).
