Every once in a while, an artist comes along whose talent is so undeniable that it inspires everyone who encounters it. Ilvia is such an artist. Ilvia Josefina Gustina was born in 1982 in the beautiful island of the Dominican Republic and raised in Curaçao. At a young age, she was interested in fashion events and always played with musical instruments.
In the 90’s she moved along with her 2 brothers and mother to the beautiful island of the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao. Which she currently lives .Her love for the guitar and batteries song attracted her by the pop rock music. Alanis Morisette and Tina Turner were her first inspiration to why she was attracted to the musical world of rock.
Also in her family, she got the inspiration from her aunt that was a member of one of the most popular female group of Dominican Republic “Las chicas Del can”. Like other couples of young musicians, Ilvia become part of different local rock bands. There she developed and discovered her musical abilities. Ilvia decided to sing in her second langue Papiamento, with feeling and grace. And she decided to be a pop rock artist singing in that language.
During ilvia’s journey to stardom her friends watched her on television each week on Curastars a local talent show, in which she won as the 2nd runner up in the 2005 competition. After that she had been performing for 6 month in the most famous hotel show in Aruba ‘let’s go Latin show, a Cuban show in the Renaissance hotel. For Ilvia this was a challenge and good experience to gain more experience with big stage and big audience, something that she takes very seriously. The Netherlands Antilles market is primed and ready for ‘Introducing myself’ release on June, 2008. Her striking beauty, charmingly down-to-earth personality, and huge, power voice has taken over the Island of Curaçao, where her debut song ‘Ayo ‘ (Good Bye) entered the chart and became fastest number one hit with a fantastic video clip . Ayo written and produced by Nick Zimmerman and Michel Bianchi claimed the Number One spot for 5 weeks. Ilvia received nominations, for best female artist for 2007 and new female artist of Curaçao. In just 6 months after its biggest hit, she was back with another single ‘Mi ke SA’ (I want to know) and ‘un dia mas’ (one more day) managed to hit just 3 times in all radios. Now Ilvia hopes to do the same with the new release of her new album. “I wanted to make an album that was totally me,” ilvia says. “Each song is about something that either I’ve gone through or that someone around me has gone through. The lyrics reflect things that I’m really passionate about. I have to be able to put myself in the song for it to ring true to me. If it doesn’t ring true to me, it’s not going to be believable to anyone else.” My passion for singing comes through loud and clear. “My love for music is my main motivation as an artist,” she says. “I’ve found that you can help so many people with your songs. I’ve received a lot of letters from people saying that ‘Ayo’ really helped them. I think if you can do that, it makes it all worth it.” For Ilvia, making a solo album was the chance to realize a dream she’s had since the tender age of 8.It was quite daunting at first, to work with such well-known people like writer Nick Zimmerman, Oscar and Michel Bor and Michael Bianchi, also to have the cooperation of Maruja Bogaard, Lisje Lispier and Tico Balentine Ilvia admits. They gave me their full attention and dedication. They were all really lovely and I learned something different from each one of them. Ilvia as a singer has a dream and a vision. She expects the best of out her and wants to be a positive influence not only in the local market, but also internationally. One day she wants to be recognized internationally to be able to speak her mind with the power of her voice. She believes that every one can influence each other with their voice, but being an artist you have a greater responsibility to spread positivism and motivation to many people around the world. Selling a CD is rewarding, but the most rewarding is knowing that you have done something special in someone’s life with my gift of singing.
