Peter Fitzpatrick (iMADEtheBBC) writes songs that deal with the subjects that pull at your heartstrings: love and loss, happiness in even the darkest hour.
The songs talk about the frustration at our human limitations: the inadequacy of language, how we make it difficult for ourselves.
And sometimes the songs are just about
"...stuff....the stuff that happens and we never stop to ask how or why..."
Peter has started work on a debut album. Although there will be some acoustic songs on the album there are pianos, strings, vocoder, horns, synthesizers, beats and loud electric guitars.
"...the short of album I shouldn't be making at my age... which is exactly why I'm making it... "
To plug the gap his debut EP "Lonely Hearts & Car Parts" is now available.
Once Upon A Lifetime
It all began in the 1970s with a love of pure pop that hasn't gone away.
Through the 1980s Peter played keyboard with members of Thin Lizzy, Cat Magic, Kick, Mirror Freak, Papa Hobo, and many Dublin pop and blues bands.
Having developed a unique approach to blending synthesizer and organic instruments he became an in-demand session player through the late-80s appearing on countless recordings.
So Good They Named It Twice
A move to New York in 1990 opened up a world of opportunity and he soon found himself writing award-winning soundtracks for the earliest multimedia CD-ROM games and interactive products.
"It felt like being a 20th Century Pioneer of sorts only without the cowboys and injuns. A mouse and keyboard instead of a horse and saddle ! ".
He soon found that writing music-to-order is not good for the soul.
While in New York he fell in with a couple of bands and one of them (Brainchild) released an album 'Love Saves The Day'.
. . .still the keyboard player . . .still the guy at the back. . .still not his songs.
Returning to Dublin in the mid-90s Peter slipped back into the Dublin live blues scene.
He says that the most rewarding part of his musicial life has been the great friends he as made through music:
Thomas Walsh (Pugwash), Dave Gregory (XTC), Andy Partridge (XTC), Michael McGlynn (Anuna), Alan White (Yes, Plastic Ono Band).
By 2007 he decided he wanted to be more than a side man and began to believe he had something to say that would resonate with an audience.
He said in his blog that it was "... time to be 1986 again. That's when I last remember imagining that I could be a singer-songwriter."
Starting Over
In the spring of 2007 Peter joined with some other like-minded artists in attending 'Stand & Deliver 2007' hosted by Tom Robinson in the UK.
The workshop and master classes were a revelation :
"I found myself truly performing for the first time in my life... I couldn't believe how easily the songs came... was it a life-changing event ? It's as close as I can imagine I guess..."
Since summer 2007 Peter has been navigating the Dublin live music scene. Playing venues around town and whenever possible playing in the UK, USA and Europe.
When asked about the fact that he came to writing songs and solo live performance relatively late in life he says
" The prospect of performing is liberating. I'm not here for the money. I'm not here for the fame. I'm here to try and say something and to see if it resonates with an audience."

Hi Peter! Thanks for the add. The Unchained Melodies sessions won't be starting up again... unfortunately. Not in the same spirit anyway, cos the lovely Freedom Cafe is no longer what it was. Dont work there now either. I might have sessions going on somewhere else in the future. I sure hope so... Think the guy who took over the venue wants to do music on some Fridays... Can give you contacts if you're interested. Thanks for support and be in touch! =)
