NEW STUDY SOLIDIFIES SUNLIGHT'S ROLE IN VITAMIN D BENEFITS
JACKSON, Mich. (Jan. 9) - As if the world needed to be reminded that sunlight is the most natural and abundant source of vitamin D, authors of a new study have added clarity by stating explicitly that the anti-cancer benefits of regular sun exposure far outweigh the risks.
Authored by University of Oslo study featured in the Jan. 15 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study already has captured media attention worldwide - gaining air time on NBC Nightly News and appearing in newspapers worldwide in syndicated reports.
The study - significant because it points out that the positive effects of regular, moderate UV exposure far outweigh the risks - is available for advance viewing by the media on the PNAS web site, www.pnas.org.
“The skin cancer risk is there but the health benefits from some sun exposure is far larger than the risk,” Johan Moan, a researcher at the Institute for Cancer Research in Oslo, who led the study, told Reuters news service. “What we find is modest sun exposure gives enormous vitamin D benefits.”
Researchers also pointed out that UV light's often-misrepresented relationship with melanoma skin cancer is not straight-forward - with indoor workers getting more melanomas than outdoor workers. Perhaps most significant, the authors believe that doubling sun exposure in Norway for the general population would prevent 10 times as many cancer deaths than it would create in additional skin cancer deaths.
Smart Tan believes that is likely too low an estimate, as the authors did not truly account for the fact that no research has isolated non-burning sun exposure as a contributing risk factor for skin cancer. "If the Norwegian public would increase their sun exposure in a non-burning fashion, we do not believe there is credible data to suggest that skin cancer mortality would increase at all, while it is likely that overall cancer mortality would decline," Smart Tan vice president Joseph Levy said. "This would make the findings even more dramatic."
The authors believe their results apply to other countries where vitamin D deficiency is an issue. More than half of all Americans and 97 percent of Canadians are considered to be vitamin D deficient at some point in the year, according to several studies.
