Born Kevin James MulHolland in Schwenksville PA, iMBECILE creator Kevin James Holland is perhaps Philadelphia’s most unknown talent. At an early age, Kevin was misdiagnosed with a number of conditions, disorders, and mental health issues, which prompted his parents school him at home. At 17, he “dropped out” and moved into the basement of a house on Secretary of State Transportation, Drew Lewis’ estate. Kevin lived there undetected by the grounds faculty for several months, and was even able to send and receive mail from the Secretary’s address. After some time Kevin was discovered sleeping in a cask room by the chief groundskeeper and brought to the head of the estate. Impressed by Kevin’s innocent charm, the Secretary allowed Kevin to work for room and board but advised him to continue his education. Kevin then dropped the “Mul” from his surname and moved about the east coast, sneaking into college and graduate level classes at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton before settling down at Vassar College. Holland became enthralled by rock music, writing, recording, and performing hundreds of songs over the next 5 years. But his proper education fell by the wayside. His refusal to pursue a lucrative career in music led his family and peers to frustration. In 1998, an alleged accident involving a Princeton country club member’s nine iron and the club owner’s Mercedes Benz lead to Holland’s institution at Norristown State Mental Hospital. Within a month, Holland was able to convince the board of trustees to release him, and lived under monthly observation. Holland then moved to West Philadelphia and formed the kEVIN jAMES vERSION. He also joined the Flat Possum Boys, who now perform under his leadership as the Citywide Specials.
