www.imeanthesnakes.com: Check out the new IMTS website
Formed in late 2006, I Mean The Snakes is Brunei's first indie-genre band. Nol and Will (UK) were playing in London but the band split up and Nol dragged Will to the jungles of Borneo to form IMTS. Adding to the mix Aya, Spawai and Boy made up the rest of the band. With the first album already out and receiving regular airplay, the band went into hibernation following the sudden departure of Will.
IMTS are back in the studio and hungry for more, late nights combined with rocket fuel, spear heading towards the as yet untitled second album. A video is also in the pipeline, to be shot by producer Adam Groves.
After ten years in the music industry, its no wonder the front man knows just exactly when to play it safe and when to risk it all. Nol Kamaruddin has perfected the art of conveying one's emotions through the flow of his inky pen. His voice is an edgy mix, from his early days in British metal band Matahari to indie band IMTS. He may have been mocked for his spray-ons by random nobodies but make no mistake: This Front man's jeans were never too tight nor did it look like they shrank in the wash.
To the untrained eye he may appear like the textbook guitarist - tall and broody but Aya is a far cry from being the typical stereotype. Aya erases from your mind that all computer geeks look like Steve Urkell. He plays amazing chords and riffs that seem to effortlessly roll together. Some people are just born talented.
Actions do speak louder than words. This quiet drummer lets his perfectly timed beats do the talking and is definitely no stranger to any rhythm. Boy's wicked quick drumming crashes and splashes throughout the tracks like a natural phenomena. His buttery beats are a pleasure to listen to till the end.
Spawai plays guitar and sings backup on IMTS. With his irresistible danceable guitar riffs, he makes it transparent that he enjoys his craft. Spawai takes the stage with an instinctive flair that only a seasoned musician can.
Stepping into Will's shoes and finding they fit, Esa Groves brings a certain je ne cest quoi, refusing to conform, he rocks out in his less than skinny jeans and as a result of that, IMTS are tapping into a more mature sound giving it a diversity that wasn't present at first.
The latest addition to the band, Synthesizer keyboard player, Dan, used to open for IMTS as a solo act. The baby of this band also sings backup and with his clever electronica synths, a new wave inspiration was been giving light to a darker more mature sound. The music is quirky and intelligent, very tongue in cheek.
Powering a music scene that is dance friendly and accessible to all ears, IMTS would be at home in New York, London or Tokyo with their indie image. Being truly original and freakishly unique! If you ever feel the desire to take a little trip, at least in your mind, IMTS will send you on one intensifying ride. Will satisfy especially those who long for the days when bands indulged in keyboard bleeps and bloops. How do they do it? By never dumbing down their lyrics and ideas - resulting in irrepressible tracks that will make dance floor devotees whirl. And just when you think your mind is blown, they come back with something else that satisfies your never ending cravings for indie-rock and art-pop.
