Histroy

The lead vocal/guitarist/songwriter for Chinese legendary all-female band The Cobra,
is widely considered one of the most talented and versatile female musicians in
mainland China. She studied accordion when she was very young, and received 3rd
class award of Chinese nation-wide accordion competition. She graduated in Tianjin
Music College as major in accordion. Studied Piano and graduated in Chinese Society
Music College in 1989. After graduation, she formed Cobra and launched her career
as a rock musician/singer. They toured all over China and Europe, including Germany,
Switzerland and Holland. They have also been invited to play in the States and became
the first Chinese band to perform at CBGB.
In 1999, Xiao Nan signed with Chinese indie label New Bees as a solo artist and
record producer.
In 2000, Cobra released their second album under New Bees. She also released two
singles as solo artist in the first Chinese female alternative album called 2/5.
One of her songs Red Wedding Dress became one of the hottest singles in China that
year. In 2001, two members of Cobra emigrated abroad, putting a halt on the band
temporarily. Xiao Nan took this chance to expand her solo career and participated
in many music projects of Chinese rock artists.
In 2003, Xiao Nan was invited to act as producer for a live music series called
An Ear To The Ground in China, which was sponsored by VW Music Fund. Meanwhile,
she was invited to playing with German artist Udo Lindenberg in Shanghai and Beijing.
She was also invited as an assistant for Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols
in the year 2004.
Xiao Nan joined Beijing MIDI Music School in 2004 as teacher for music recording
and vocal technique. She was also named the president for an indie sub-label “Liu
Shui Yin” under New Bees.
In 2006/2007, Xiao Nan was invited to act as the Director for annual MIDI Music
Festival in Beijing.
Meanwhile she was teaching music in Western Academy of Beijing as part time teacher.
In winter 2006, Xiao Nan happened to play in a few clubs of Berlin with her friend
Enrico Dalisay, a Filipino musician, who she has been knowing for a long time.
In 2007 she joined the first Chinese electronic band–project “supermarket” as keyboard
player/vocal/guitarist/composer.
The same year, Xiao Nan was directing the Beijing Pop Music Festival as stage-manager
and later on recorded a song with the German band Liquido in Berlin.
In 2008, Supermarket released new album, meanwhile played at Beijing music festival
and Starlive club, Mao live club etc.
From 2009, Xiao Nan will continue her career.
