One night as Gene Quill was leaving the bandstand at Birdland, a young self-appointed critic accosted him. "All you're doing is playing just like Charlie Parker," he accused. Gene held out his saxophone. "Here," he said, "you play just like Charlie Parker!"

   I.M.C.'s Blurbs
About me:

We are the Improvised Music Collective – five passionate lovers of improvised music in all its diversity. We host a weekly 90 minute radio program devoted to improvised music – NOW’S THE TIME – on CKCU-FM 93.1 (in the Ottawa region) and on www.ckcufm.com on the world wide web on Thursday nights from 8:30 to 10:00pm est. We play the best of improvised music from around the world and recorded over the last 100 years. The unifying force of this program is that we play the music we LOVE. We present timely programming that reflects relevent activities in the world of improvised music (say, the death of a venerable giant of jazz, upcoming music festivals, etc.). The IMC endeavours to present intelligent and entertaining programming which is both timeless and current. We’ll still offer up our dynamic group shows from time to time but we intend to also include new features such as a NOW’S THE TIME episode every couple of months devoted entirely to improvising artists we discover on MYSPACE. We pride ourselves in delivering each week our commitment to context, insightful commentary, artist interviews and documentaries that enrich the listening experience. As always, our boundaries are our imaginations. So, be prepared for “the sound of surprise”. We welcome listener feedback. Check it out! We’re sure you’ll love what we play, too!

Any improvising artist/group/ensemble wishing to submit recordings for airplay on NOW'S THE TIME may send CDs to:

Who I'd like to meet:
"NOW'S THE TIME" SCHEDULE - 8:30 - 10:00PM EST. on CKCU-FM 93.1 or www.ckcufm.com....

JUNE 11- Abandoning his “year of the trumpet” theme and lost album feature (blame the A.A.D.D), MarkO is in to play some of the things that have gotten his (limited) attention since you last heard from him. Running free.

JUNE 18- Host Andrew Forbes gets you ready for Father's Day with a very special show devoted to fathers and sons -- and co-hosted by his very own dad.

JUNE 25- IMC member Jim Reil completes his three-part series on the Black Saint/Soulnote recordings of Muhal Richard Abrams.

JULY 2- IMC member Aidian Thomas guides the listener on a fascinating musical journey through the world of improvised music and jazz.

JULY 9 - Mark Keill (of Infinite Ceilings fame) is in Mark O’s spot presenting a retrospective on jazz-fusion-rock bassist (and Soft Machine member) Hugh Hopper. In turn, Mark O takes Mark K’s spot on Infinite Ceilings (right after Now’s the Time) to play some post-rock-doom-prog-metal. Fun for all and all for fun.

JULY 16- IMC member Ron Steeds continues the summer-long series, on the music of Montreal saxophonist / composer / bandleader Francois Carrier, that he and Andrew Forbes are presenting with excerpts of an interview with the artist conducted last month.
