Who are The Incredible Expanding Mindfuck?
well, Why do you ask?
Incredible Expanding Mindfuck, also known as IEM, is a musical side project of Porcupine Tree's leader, Steven Wilson.
This project developed out of Steven's interest in experimental music from the sixties, seventies and beyond, particularly krautrock and the cosmic jazz of artists like Sun Ra. The music is not intended to be nostalgic, but does nevertheless draw inspiration from aspects of this music. The project is almost entirely instrumental.
"Since both IEM and Bass Communion are pretty off-the-wall and self-indulgent projects, I realised it would be pointless to give the music to record labels who would have a hard time selling it and would probably just end up aiming it at existing Porcupine Tree and No-Man fans. I would much rather this music found its own audience in a more organic and low-key way, through the Internet and a select group of mail order outlets and specialist shops." Steven Wilson.
