   About indeepmusicarchiveuk
The In Deep Music archive is a Library of all formats of music, 12 inch Vinyl LP, 7 inch single, 10 inch, 12 inch single, CD, Cassette, Reel to Reel tape, 8 Track Cartridge, 78RPM as well as VHS and DVD, Laser discs and reference books, encyclopedias, catalogues, biographies and any information that can be used to inspire music lovers, help record collectors with information and generally introduce music to all people.

Collected by Marty Willson-Piper over the past 40 years, the archive has grown into this wonderful collection through a life of scouring the record stores around the world, but also through generous donations from friends, fans and labels alike.

A list of "Friends of In Deep" follows. Our postal address is listed and if you would like to continue to support us here at In Deep we will be most grateful. Be assured that we love to hear from you and anything that you send us will be greatly appreciated. We look after the collection with love and affection. We will try to review records, old and new that we like and hear about. We have a nice Linn turntable, a NAD Stereo Amp, a Cambridge Audio CD Player and some lovely old Goodmans Speakers as well as comfy chairs and original Lava Lamps for the most gratifying listening experience. You just have to close your eyes. We even have our own "Moth" Vinyl cleaning machine. Liz Tyrell is the honorary Librarian.

We are many things. An archive, a label, a studio, an information resource, project co-ordinators, a film music research library, a sampling library, producers and engineers, a collective of musicians and songwriters, a small management company and if we can be, a musicians' advice bureau.

The VIP Lounge studio lives next door and Dare Mason is constantly in there either creating and working on his own projects or getting the best out of anybody that comes in as a Producer, Engineer, Arranger and Musician. Check out the VIP Lounge Website. www.viplounge.org.uk or www.myspace.com/viploungestudio

We try to get involved in as many things as we can sincerely contribute to, but for all our efforts to simply encourage it for its own sake is a cause in itself.

We are also very connected and tuned into great artwork and we hate spelling mistakes. Check out Rachel Gutek's site http://www.guppyart.com/ Rachel has worked on lots of our projects Noctorum, solo albums and The Church as well as dozens of other artists from all styles and eras. Our own Tiare Helberg is also a design freak!! She's also worked on The Church & MWP album artwork, tees, posters etc, she's an Interior Designer, photographer, muso. All photos on this myspace are by Tiare.

In a perfect world we would also be our own radio station allowing the public to discover new things over the airwaves, promoting the artist catalogue and introducing the listener to a myriad of music they would otherwise never have heard of. That sad old story with the radio, the one place you rarely would want to go to listen to music, is a desperate one and the royalties issues with Internet radio is also a mountain to overcome. How can artists be paid? But how can we expose all this great music to the masses. If you would give us your permission and we love you, we can feature you.

I often wonder how advertising actually works when it is so consistently idiotic. But what is promotion and what is exposure and how do we find the balance between listening to something you like and paying the person who made it? Especially when you can find it for free.

At least now musicians have complete control and although we sell less, we get a bigger cut. Now it's up to us to engage the public imagination with the music rather than the promo budget. With the push towards digital sales and lower quality of sound, the fast food mentality. The attempt to sell more of something worse at the same price. Can we not at least have our sound quality back? And no more ignoring other age groups and less accessible genres. Sex sells but so does cerebral. Can't we have both? Dancers and thinkers? Or even thinking dancers?? One can imagine the record companies were dumb enough to gnaw off their own foot, their own private Easter Island, but the worse thing they did was make it all mean less.

Of course these days, the issues with selling music are complex but I believe there is a desire out there for the public to act as patrons for the music they wish to support. Record companies frittering away money on lavish budgets for the mediocre, famously misreading the market place and second guessing trends that have moved on as they are commandeering the limousine that always shows up too late for the point; creating awful shallow waste, letting this most precious of art forms literally slip through their fingers.

So now artists at all levels of their musical development must choose their own path and hope that their public follows them in much the same way as David Bowie did with his genre experiments in the 70's. Of course music has the right to exist for any reason. Without a less stuffy approach to music we may never have had the glory of glam or the thrust of punk but why does one style have to wipe out the next? Good and bad exists everywhere and after all it's completely subjective. One man's phat rhythm is another's stupefying lyric and for all those brilliant progressive musical visionaries there's a burst of precocious energy to contradict. Remember jazz is not commercial music and every orchestra is subsidized by the government.

Alan McGee inspiringly remarked that the dole queue was responsible for allowing the future of British Music to flourish.

I have spent my life making music but also listening constantly, discovering music, hunting it down. There are thousands of hidden jewels languishing below the surface, waiting to be dug up. I can’t tell you about them quick enough!!

I would like to set up some kind of music club with a large archive of available music that releases a regular compilation in much the same way as Mojo or Uncut might. I would encourage artists and labels who own rights for “dead” catalogue, exhausted by re-release, re-packaging, re-mastering and extra tracks to allow use of the tracks on a CD for free whilst encouraging the public to purchase the artists music in the Music Club. If we make any progress on this and figure out how to solve the royalty and rights issues we will let you know.

In the meantime the archive is free to explore for visitors to the studio and we are free to exploit our own catalogue with those who wish to be part of this enterprise with us. We will have a series of our own releases as well as custom compilations of tracks we own for sale. Dare has VIP Lounge Compilation CD's available at his site and at The Church's online shop you can find the complete catalogue of The Church including a lot of hard to find solo albums and projects not available anywhere else. Please go to: www.thechurchband.com

Watching artists waste their resources has made me interested in efficient management of the pocket book as well as the heart. I remain in awe of what the good people know and am astonished at the the bad decisions I see musicians make. Please listen to reason, know who the inspired characters are, think deeply when you make your choices and do not fall victim to the fabulists.

Our management wing is small but informed, realistic. We have been doing this a long time and can help with all kinds of consultations that introduce music to music fans and help save money for artists with common sense, as well as generating income with merchandise and musical projects. We will try and direct you to those who can help, if we can't.

We are all cogs in the great machine. When I see the problems that Pandora (Internet radio) is having I wonder how we move forward. Pandora is first and foremost a labour of love. Who would want to restrict them when almost nobody can sell records? At least let them educate us a little. Where can we find another John Peel, or even another Fluff? People who know music out of their passion for it. People whose motive is sound.

In this mad world of money for art, this disparate anomaly, what seems to be the issue is waste. Not just an environmental waste but incessant bombardment of "subjective" rubbish, mental and physical. If we can be made more aware of better food, that is a better realized visual and aural menu, then our souls may stand a chance.
