Getting Started

How do I start using MySpaceIM?

  1. If you haven't installed the application yet, first download the installer (look for the big Download button). Internet Explorer users can select "Run" to immediately start installing, while others should save the installer to disk and then double-click it to start installation. In either case, follow the directions to install the MySpaceIM with Skype application. Note: You must have Administrator privileges on your PC to install IM.
  2. Double-click the MySpaceIM with Skype icon on your desktop, or select Start -> Programs -> MySpace -> MySpaceIM.
  3. In the login panel that pops up, enter your MySpace email and password.
  4. If you do not have a MySpace Username yet, you will be prompted to create one - just follow the instructions.

That's it, you should be signed in. To start chatting, add your friends. You can also talk to your friends on IM for FREE, plus take advantage of lots of other call features.

top

How do I add friends to my contact list?

Your current MySpace friends will not appear automatically in your contact list. You must add them in one of the following ways:

  • Drag and drop -- while viewing just about any MySpace page, click on a friend's name or pic, drag it into the contact list, and release the mouse. Cool, huh?
  • Click on the Add button near the bottom of the MySpaceIM Contact List window and type in your friend's email or Username.
  • IM your friend and they will be added automatically to your Recent Contacts.
  • Use the "Add Friend Wizard." In the main IM window, select People -> Add Friend Wizard and click one of the options - add all your friends, add just your Top friends, or pick which friends to add (this last option opens a new web page).

top

What is my friend's MySpace Username?

On your friend's profile page, look for a section called "MySpace URL" underneath their main picture, or look in the page title at the top of the browser window. For example, the Username for http://www.myspace.com/tom is tom.

If your friend only has a number for their URL, that means they haven't picked a Username yet and they don't have IM. Tell them to get it here:

http://im.myspace.com/

top

My friends don't have MySpaceIM yet.

Tell them to get it! The easiest way is invite them directly from the IM application by selecting People -> Invite and following the instructions. This feature sends an email with all the necessary MySpaceIM information.

They can also get MySpaceIM by visiting this page:

http://im.myspace.com/

top

Can I send a message to friends who aren't on my list?

Sure -- just follow steps:

  1. Click on the IM button near the bottom of the main IM window.
  2. Near the top of the new window that opens, type in the email or Username of any MySpace friend.
  3. Type a message in the bottom entry area, then press Enter or click the Send button.
  4. If you are not on their Contact List, they must accept your message before it will be delivered. Or if they do not have MySpaceIM yet, you will be prompted to invite them.

top

General

Can I prevent people from sending me messages?

Absolutely. There are two ways to prevent people from IMing you:

  1. Go to "Privacy" in Preferences (under the File menu)
    • Under "Who can contact me," select "Only people on my Contact list."
With that setting, only people you have on YOUR Contact List will be able to IM you.
  2. You can also BLOCK specific users.
    • If you receive an "Accept IM" message from someone you don't like, click "Deny and Block."
    • If someone is IMing you and you want them to stop, click the red block icon next to the user's picture, or right-click the user's picture and select "Block Contact" from the menu.
    • If someone is on your Contact List and you want to stop them from IMing you, right-click their name and select "Block Contact."

top

How do I delete a contact from my list?

  1. In your contact list, right click on on the contact you wish to delete.
  2. From the menu that pops up, select "Remove Contact."
  3. In the dialog that appears, select "OK" to confirm that you really want to delete this contact.

top

How do I stop MySpaceIM from saving my chats?

To stop saving your chats with a particular contact:

  1. If you aren't already chatting with that contact, double click the contact to open a Message Window.
  2. Select File -> Message History - > Off in the Message Window.

To stop saving all chats for all contacts:

  1. Select File -> Preferences and go to the Message History panel.
  2. Near the top, select "Do not save my IMs."

Note that this does not clear out previous messages -- see the next item for more about that.

top

How do I delete previously saved chats?

To delete chats for a particular contact:

  1. If you aren't already chatting with that contact, double click the contact to open a Message Window.
  2. Click "Clear History" above the chat output (only appears if chats have been recorded previously for that user).

To delete all previous chats:

  1. Select File -> Preferences and go to the Message History panel.
  2. Under "History Files," click the "Clear All Message History Files" button.

top

How do I stop MySpaceIM from starting up automatically?

  1. Select File -> Preferences and go to the General panel.
  2. Under "Starting Up," uncheck "Start MySpaceIM when my computer starts."
  3. Click either the OK or Apply button to save the new setting.

top

Can more than one person use MySpaceIM on the same computer?

Yes! You don't need to install it again -- more than one person can use the same installation. The best way is for each MySpace user to use a different Windows User account, and MySpaceIM will automatically handle each user separately.

If you're not doing that (or you have an older Windows system that doesn't support user accounts), then you must disable automatic sign-in as follows (while someone is signed in):

  1. Select File -> Preferences and go to the General panel.
  2. Under "Starting Up," uncheck "Sign-in automatically to this account."
  3. Click either the OK or Apply button to save the new setting.

Now the login panel will appear whenever you start MySpaceIM, so you can enter your own email to log in. Note that for privacy and security, you should probably uncheck the box to save your password.

top

Can I change my Username?

Sorry, you cannot change your IM Username (which is also your MySpace URL). We warned you when you were selecting your Username that you cannot change it later!

The only thing you can do is add extra spaces or change the case of the letters. For example, if your Username is "myspacedude," you can set it to appear as "MySpace Dude." To do this, go to File -> Preferences, select the General panel, edit the My IM Name field, and click Update. If you try to delete characters or add anything besides spaces, it will not be updated. When you use this option, other IM users will see it.

Note that others who have added you as a contact can choose to view your Username, view your MySpace display name, or they can type in a custom name (to do this, right click on a contact and select "Display As"). You have no control over which one of these options they choose.

top

Can I customize the appearance of MySpaceIM?

Yes, you can! You can change the entire appearance by choosing one of several Skins automatically installed with MySpaceIM. More Skins will be available in the future. To change your Skin:

  1. Under the File menu, select "Change Skin."
  2. At the top of the Preferences window that opens, select a new Skin under "Skins and Themes" and click the OK button.

The new skin will take effect immediately (wait for all IM windows to close and reload).

You can also change the color and background color of your message text, or define a custom background. Just go to File -> Preferences -> Appearance.

top

Can I transfer documents or pictures with MySpaceIM?

Currently you can only send pictures. They can reside either on your computer or on a web site. Try one of the following:

  • To share a picture on your computer, just drag it from from any window and drop it into the chat entry area. You can also use the "Send Picture" button in the Message Window.
  • To share a web picture, just drag an image from a web page and drop it into the chat entry area. If the image has a link, that may not work, so you can also type an HTML img tag with a complete url as the source.

top

How do I create my own Emoticons and Zaps?

Zap Wizard

It's easy -- just to go File -> Preferences - Emoticons & Zaps, select either "Emoticons" or "Zaps" at the top, then click the "Add" button.

For an emoticon, just pick any image that you like when prompted - use one that will look good at small sizes.

For a zap, you will be guided by a wizard through several steps: select an image, select a WAV sound file (50k or less) and enter some text. You can even preview it before saving.

Important: Keep in mind that you might share these with people who have slower connections. For this reason, we limit the size of the files you can use. IM will try to resize large images for you. But if a sound is too large, you must compress it first with a utility such as WavePad.

top

Can I use MySpaceIM for other IM services?

Not at this time.

top

Will there be a Macintosh, Linux or mobile version of MySpaceIM?

Mac and Linux users, we've heard your pleas and haven't forgotten you! We are concentrating on working out the kinks in the PC version, and are assessing various options for providing IM to our Mac and Linux users, as well as eventually delivering IM on mobile devices.

Troubleshooting

I cannot install MySpaceIM.

If you are using Windows 98 or ME, you will not be able to install the lastest release (1.0.745+) because those Windows versions are no longer supported. You will probably get an error such as "Myspaceim_setup has caused an error in MYSPACEIM_SETUP.EXE. Myspaceim_setup will now close" or "MSIMCLIENTSETUP caused an invalid page fault." You can continue to use an older version of MySpaceIM installed on your machine (just cancel the Update dialog whenever it appears). If you've uninstalled your older version, you can download version 1.0.716 here and re-install it.

If you are not using Windows 98/ME and the installer appears to freeze before finishing or you get the message "Components didn't download from the internet" or "Please check your internet connection and try again," try one the following:

  • The network may be busy. Wait a while (at least 10 minutes) and then run the installer again, or try it during off hours, i.e. late at night or early in the morning (U.S. time).
  • Try downloading the installer directly using the following link:
    Download latest installer

I cannot see the IM window after starting the application.

After upgrading to version 1.0.739 (released 12/12/2007), some users cannot see the IM window even though the application appears in the Windows taskbar. You can fix it by installing the latest version available here. You can also fix it by deleting or renaming your MySpaceIM Settings.xml file. Look for it in the following location (substitute WINUSER with your Windows username; you may also need to change the drive letter):

Windows 2000/XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\WINUSER\Application Data\MySpace\IM\Settings.xml

Windows Vista:
C:\Users\WINUSER\AppData\Roaming\MySpace\IM\Settings.xml

I get a connection error while trying to log in.

If you are getting an error such as "Check your Internet Connection." or "Hmm, can't connect! (#8) Check internet connection or firewall," and you're sure your internet connection is working, there are 2 possible causes:

A. The new IM triggers a known bug relating to sharing in Windows Vista.
A new issue has cropped up for Windows Vista users trying to run the latest MySpaceIM with Skype. Usually IM works for a while, but then stops working. If you were able to connect with version 1.0.716 or earlier without a problem, a hotfix from Microsoft may be the solution (this hotfix does not apply to other Windows versions). Refer to the following Microsoft Knowledgebase article to see if this hotfix might apply to you, and for information about how to get it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937168

B. The MySpaceIM application is being blocked by security software.
The most likely cause is that the MySpaceIM application is being blocked by one or more of the following:

  • Windows Firewall
  • Another personal firewall
  • Virus scanner software
  • Internet security software
  • Worm protection software
  • Spyware blocking software
  • DSL/Cable router
  • If you are at work - your company's network (also may be an issue at public locations)

By far the most common cause of error #8 has been due to one or more of these items blocking MySpaceIM. One way to check this is to temporarily disable these items (if possible) and see if you can connect. Instructions are provided below for enabling MySpaceIM with some common firewalls -- just click on the appropriate link.

If you upgrade MySpaceIM and can't connect any more, repeat whatever you did previously to make it work. If you added MySpaceIM to an Exceptions/Allowed list, remove it from that list, then add and allow it again.

Windows Firewall

  1. Launch Windows Firewall, e.g. Select Start -> Control Panel, then double click Windows Firewall.
  2. On the General tab, check whether the Firewall is On. If it is, proceed to the next step. Otherwise, you're done (because the firewall is not enabled and thus can't be blocking MySpaceIM).
  3. Go to the Exceptions tab.
  4. If MySpaceIM does not appear in the list, skip to the next step.

If MySpaceIM already appears in the list, click it to select it and click the Delete button.
  5. Click Add Program..., click "Browse," and locate the MySpaceIM program (usually C:\Program Files\MySpace\IM\MySpaceIM.exe).
  6. Select the file and click Open.
  7. Click OK to save your change.

I get an encryption error while trying to log in.

If you are getting the message "Your system requires 128 bit encyption to use MySpaceIM" when trying to log in, you probably have an older version of Internet Explorer. Try upgrading it to the latest version in one of two ways:

top

I am having trouble creating a Username.

Try to create one via MySpace as follows:

  1. Go to your Home page (click on "Home" in the top navigation menu from any MySpace web page).
  2. In the left column, locate the URL box beneath the box with your picture.
  3. If the box says "Pick your MySpace Name/URL," follow the instructions to create a unique MySpace Username (choose carefully, because you will not be able to change it later).
  4. Relaunch MySpaceIM and try logging in again using your usual email address and password.

top

Zaps, emoticons or other IM settings are not being saved.

Certain settings are only saved when you exit IM properly, i.e. by selecting File -> Exit within the IM application. We'll have an update in our next release so that these items are saved when you log out of Windows or properly shut down your PC.

And by the way, you should never shut down your computer by just turning off the power -- always use the "Shut Down" command (one place you'll find it is on the Start Menu). You not only will you lose your settings, but some files could actually get damaged.

top

I cannot edit my emoticons.

If your emoticons don't display correctly under Preferences and you can't edit them, one of your custom emoticons probably has a corrupt image. The only way to fix it at this time is to remove all your custom emoticons (although you can try to save the files and add them again, one by one -- but realize you may eventually re-add the "bad" one!). We promise to provide a better way to fix it in a future IM release.

  1. If more than one MySpace user logs in to MyspaceIM on this computer, first find out your Friend ID -- you can do that by viewing your own profile (in MySpaceIM, you can click your picture at the top of the Contact list, then click on "View Profile" in the flyout that appears). You can see the Friend ID at the end of the URL in the top of your browser window -- keep this page open if you like.
  2. Sign out and exit from MySpaceIM -- right click on the IM icon (green chat bubble) and select "Exit MySpaceIM."
  3. Find the folder where your emoticons are stored (called "Smileys"):

Option A - If you're an experienced Windows user:
    1. Locate your MySpaceIM Application Data folder ("Show hidden files and folders" Folder must be enabled in your system Folder Options). In Windows XP, it's usually C:\Documents and Settings\WINUSER\Application Data\. In Vista, it's usually C:\Users\WINUSER\AppData\Roaming\. In either case, substitute WINUSER with your Windows username.
    2. From there just go to MySpace\IM\Extra\FRIENDID\ (where FRIENDID is your MySpace Friend ID).
Option B - Search your computer as follows (in Windows XP):
    1. In any open file/folder window, click the Search button at the top, then click "All Files and Folders."
    2. Enter "Smileys" for the file name (first box), click "More Advanced Options" and make sure "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search subfolders" are checked, then click "Search." This may take a while if you have a lot of files.
    3. In the results, look for a Smileys folder with "MySpace" in its folder path; if there is more than one, select the one which also has your Friend ID in the path.
  4. Right click on the Smileys folder and select "Delete" (or select "Rename" if you don't want to remove it completely, and type in new name such as "Smileys_backup").
  5. Restart MySpacIM (e.g. double-click the desktop icon or go to Start -> Programs -> MySpace -> MySpaceIM) and go to File -> Preferences -> Emoticons & Zaps to verify that you can edit again.

top

I cannot edit my zaps.

This problem is essentially the same as that described in the previous entry for emoticons -- you can't edit your zaps because at least one of your custom zaps has a corrupt image file. Do the same thing to fix it, except you should search for and remove (or rename) the MySpaceIM "Zaps" folder instead of the "Smileys" folder.

top

IM crashes or exits unexpectedly.

Most IM crashes are caused by the presence of spyware on the computer. Spyware usually runs in the background without the user being aware of it, having been installed by a virus or a free application. Many utilities are available to fix and prevent such problems, such as Microsoft Windows Defender. It's a really good idea to periodically scan your computer for such software, even if you aren't having problems.

top

When I send a message, my text doesn't show up.

This issue occurred in older versions (before 1.0.716.0 released on 8/15/2007) and is caused by using a font that has an apostrophe or single quote character in its name, e.g. Phil's font or Cool 'ol font. To fix it, just upgrade MySpaceIM. Or you can select a new font while in a message window before you start typing a message, or go to File -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Font & Color.

Skype

How do I get started using the Skype features?

First, you will need the following:

  • the latest version of MySpaceIM with Skype
  • a working microphone
  • either speakers or headphones (headphones are strongly recommended to avoid feedback and noise issues).

The first time you sign in with the Skype-enabled IM, you will automatically receive a Skype account. When you are successfully connected to Skype, you'll see either "Call Phones" or "Make a free call" below your list of contacts, and all Skype-related buttons will be enabled.

Before trying to make a call, check your video and audio settings (you only need to do this once on a given computer):

  1. Select File -> Preferences.
  2. Go to the Audio Settings panel and select appropriate devices under "Microphone" and "Speaker."
  3. Click OK to save the settings.

Many call options are also available from the Call menu at the top. For more about all the call features, keep reading the rest of this FAQ.

How do I talk to a MySpaceIM user?

It's easy! First, both of you need the items mentioned above and must be signed in to IM and connected to Skype. There are many ways to start talking to your friend - here are just some of them:

  • Click once on your friend in the contact list -- in the flyout, click on the Call (blue phone) button. If a menu pops up (because your friend has set up phone numbers), click "Make a Skype Call (PC to PC)."
  • Right-click on your friend in the contact list and select "Call [friendname]" from the menu.
  • If you are currently chatting with your friend, click the Call (blue phone) button near the upper right corner of the chat window.

A Call window will open for both you and your friend -- your friend must click the Accept button so you can actually start talking to each other. To stop talking, click the Hang Up (red phone) button.

How do I talk to a phone?

First, you'll need to have Skype credit for a call; if this is your first call, you may be able to make it for free. You have many ways to initiate a call, here are just some of them:

Important: When entering a phone number, be sure to include an area code. If calling another country, first select a flag from the country code selector. To set your own default country, go to the "Skype Call Settings" panel under File -> Preferences, select a country under "My Country," then click the OK or Apply button to save it.

  • Type the phone number into the field above your list of contacts that says "Name or phone number" and press Enter. Tip: To make the country code selector appear, type a number first, then you can select a different country if necessary.
  • First, open the Dial window by clicking on "Call Phones" (or "Make a free call" if you have that option). Enter the number by typing it into the "Type number" field, or by clicking the dialpad buttons. Then click the Call (blue phone) button.

Go to the "Call Forwarding" panel under File -> Preferences, check "Forward calls when I'm not on MySpaceIM with Skype," then fill in at least one valid phone number. Note that if you previously filled in any phone numbers under the "Skype Call Settings" Preference panel (see below), you can click the drop-down arrow to select from those numbers. The Call Forwarding feature will not be enabled unless you buy Skype credit - you can use the link that appears on the panel, or use the Add Credit (formerly View Account) button.

What happens if I have both Voicemail and Call Forwarding enabled?

First the call will go the phone that calls are being forwarded to. If that phone does not pick up, then the call will eventually go to Skype Voicemail. But remember, if the phone has its own voicemail, then that voicemail will take over, and the call will not go to Skype Voicemail.

Skype Troubleshooting

I get "Skype unavailable" in the status area.

If you've been able to connect to Skype previously, the Skype service is probably down. MySpaceIM will automatically keep trying to connect - you do not need to exit or sign out of MySpaceIM.

If you've never been able to connect, you probably have firewall or security software blocking the connection. Refer to I get a connection error while trying to log in for info about dealing with such software.

I can't hear anything or no one can hear me.

Test that your microphone and speakers or headphones are working:

  • Sound Recorder is a standard Windows program which you can use to test record and playback of your voice (usually available under Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Sound Recorder).
  • Try making a call in MySpaceIM to "echo123" (this special Skype contact is added automatically when you first use MySpaceIM with Skype; if you deleted it, just re-add it to your Skype Contacts group).
  • Visit Skype's Sound and Audio Setup page, which has some helpful info about checking your sound settings.

Fixing a sound/audio problem sometimes involves updating the software for your PC's sound card; visit the web site of your sound card vendor for more information. Other problems can be caused by incorrect PC BIOS settings; refer to the manual for your PC for more information.
