I've always listened to a wide variety of music, and when I was younger, I never really drew any distinctions between genres. But I will say that my personal favorite 'period' for music would fall between around 1965 and 1973.
Newer stuff that I've been turned onto includes Morcheeba, Kan'nal, Beohbe, Gravenhurst, Broadcast, Coco Rosie, Kid Loco, (jesus life..) Cat Power, and Mazzy Star. I love old Joni Mitchell (first 5 albums) and a great family band based out of new york, called 'The Veltz Family'. There are a few lesser known singer/songwriters whom I consider very talented- folks like Iron and Wine, Dave Pahanish and Abbey Ahmad. I also like a lot of 'chick' music like Mary Lou Lord, Lucinda Williams.
Thievery Corporation, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, Sadhna Sargam, Gunjan (incredible vocalist) Tabla Beat Science, Fela Kuti, AC/DC, Bruce Cockburn, Edward Bear, Fat Mama, Genesis, Grand Funk, The Decemberists, Pink Floyd, Todd Rundgren, and Hanson.
Amadou & Mariam, fom Mali, and are quite huge in Africa. In fact, World Music from places such as Thailand, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, NZ, Mali, Senegal, and China all make their way into my itunes collection.
I'm always interested in trading for something which will expand both our musical horizons - Just shoot me an email or post your favorites here.
