About me:

You may not see the effects tanning has on your health today, but your choice to tan and how you tan early in life may haunt you later.  Studies suggest that the younger you are when you tan - indoors or outdoors - the greater your risk for cancer and premature aging due to overexposure to UV rays.  Studies also suggest that avoiding sunburns, especially in childhood and adolescence, may reduce your risk of melanoma skin cancer.

The growing trend is skipping the sun and heading to the salon for a golden tan.

The Numbers

The indoor tanning industry has increased significantly during the last two decades and there are now an estimated 24 million people a year who use indoor tanning facilities.  An estimated tem percent of minors ages 11-18 are going to salons and using tanning devices.  At an estimated forty to twenty-six percent, there are more girls using tanning devices than boys in the 17-18 range.

Every day in the United States, there are between one and two million people who will use an indoor tanning device.  Because the use of indoor tanning devices can have serious health consequences, the Florida Legislature authorized the Florida Department of Health and its county health departments to regulate tanning facilities in the state.

Ultraviolet light and you

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a part of the light spectrum.  UV light is made up of different light wavelengths known as UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.  Overexposure to the UV spectrum can damage your skin.

UV from the sun

The sunscreens sold to prevent or reduce sunburn work against the effects of the sun's UV-A and UV-B rays.  Most of the light we receive from the sun is UV-B.  One of the benefits of exposing your skin to the sun's rays is the production of vitamin D - a vitamin our bodies need.

UV from tanning beds

Tanning beds use a combination of UV-B and UV-A light.  UV-B starts the tanning process and UV-A completes it.
