"I was born on 6 July 1935, and named Lhamo Thondup, to a poor family in the small village of Taktser in the province of Amdo.
The name, Lhamo Thondup, literally means ‘Wish-Fulfilling Goddess’.
Taktser (Roaring Tiger) was a small and poor settlement that stood on a hill overlooking a broad valley. "
His Holiness’ three elder brothers were Thupten Jigme Norbu - the eldest, who was recognised as the reincarnation of a high lama, Taktser Rinpoche - Gyalo Thondup and Lobsang Samten. The youngest brother, Tenzin Cheogyal was also recognised as the reincarnation of another high lama, Ngari Rinpoche.
"Of course, no one had any idea that I might be anything other than an ordinary baby. It was almost unthinkable that more than one tulku (reincarnation) could be born into the same family and certainly my parents had no idea that I would be proclaimed Dalai Lama.I myself likewise had no particular intimation of what lay ahead. My earliest memories are very ordinary.
I am held to be the reincarnation of each of the previous thirteen Dalai Lamas of Tibet (the first having been born in 1351 AD), who are in turn considered to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezig, Bodhisattva of Compassion, holder of the White Lotus. Thus I am also believed to be a manifestation of Chenrezig, in fact the seventy-fourth in a lineage that can be traced back to a Brahmin boy who lived in the time of Buddha Shakyamuni. I am often asked whether I truly believe this. The answer is not simple to give. But as a seventy one year old, when I consider my experience during this present life, and given my Buddhist beliefs, I have no difficulty accepting that I am spiritually connected both to the thirteen previous Dalai Lamas, to Chenrezig and to the Buddha himself".

Daily training in the art of peace allows your inner divinity to shine brighter and brighter. Do not concern yourself with the right and wrong doing of others. Do not be calculating or act unnaturaly. Keep your mind set on the Art of Peace, and do not critisize other teachers and traditions. The Art of Peace never restrains, restricts or shackles anything. It imbraces all and purifies everything.
Even though our path is completly different from the warrior arts of the past, It is not necessary to abandon totally the old ways. Absorb venerable traditions into this new Art by clothing them fresh garments, and build on the classic styles to create better forms.
Practice the Art of Peace sincierly and evil thoughts will naturaly dissapear. The only desire that should remain is the thirst for more and more training in the way.
Witnessing the polarity to which the present moment is leading us, it is no longer possible the apolitization of any sphere of the human activity. Political neutrality is a bourgeois myth because not fighting against exploitation lead us to accomplice it.
Another contribution with respect to politics is the attention to live in the present the future conditions of life. The radical activist lives based on the future. And lives with such intensity that frequently forgets the present. Therefore, he is often bitter and suffered. Sadness does not have to be a revolutionary attitude, but rather the Optimism that Hope gives. It is necessary to worry about the future, but living the own present and knowing how to enjoy it, even in the present structures. Why not anticipate the society we are figthing for?
Poverty, in addition, is a category that not always bears relation to the deprivation from material goods. Luis XV in Versailles was rich, in spite of living with less comforts than any middle-high class of our days. To be rich is to have because the others do not have.
Perhaps in last instance, what really characterizes the poor in front of the rich is the lack of security. The poor does not have support to solve its difficulties. There cannot be cultural change without the change of political structures. The Beats broke the political do-nothing of American youth. After the “beats” there were manifestations in favor of human rights: revolts of the universities, the New Left, the “Black Panthers”, the revolts of the ghettos, the pacifists against the war of Vietnam, to finish with the so called “Mcgovern phenomenon”. Therefore a change can only happen on condition of a strong revolutionary commitment and an organizational critical capacity, that was in which they failed.
