Their story, my voice…
The Secret War Billboard Project
I was one of the first Hmong children born in America, each year my birth is a constant reminder of those who were left behind and continue to fight for my freedom. My aspiration was to create a painted billboard that speaks out about the injustices of the remaining Hmong soldiers called Freedom Fighters from the “Secret War” during the Vietnam War.
Inspired by Hmong textiles and vibrant colors of my culture I divided the billboard representing the two worlds I live in. My spirit is still trapped in the Jungles of Laos while my soul is in America living out my dreams. I want to inspire young minds to pursue their passion, but remind us not to forget how we won our freedom to America. I hope someday we can end the “Secret War” and bring peace to those remaining in Laos still fighting…
Thanks to Forecast Public Art Grant with support from the Jerome Foundation for making my voice heard and bringing this project to life.

~ Siren and Spike~
The Stalker: Siren
Siren was born high in the Echo Mountains to the native Euqinu tribe. Neglected and ignored Siren wanders beyond the village where she meets a forest creature named Spike. Forbidden to take him home she built a nest on her back and hides him there. When she reached the age of speech she uttered strange sounds. Her childhood mutterings caused sickness within the village, the villager’s cursed her very existence and forced her mother to sacrifice Siren in the Verboten Forest.
Feeling pity for Siren her mother left her daughter at the waters of the forest spirit. Siren was wrapped in a blanket, adorned with silver jewelry, and a hand woven skirt. Hidden within the design of the skirt was a secret map she must unravel. Silence filled the air and Siren was alone. Rage and sadness took over Siren, who let out an immense cry and with a powerful echo her mother running out of the forest reverberated into dust.
A gust of wind twirled around Siren and drew her into the heart of forest. The Forest Spirit emerged from the trees and bestowed to her a Horn of Emanation and crystal of Verboten Forest within the nest of her back. Curiously Siren blows the horn and the ground illuminates around her, revealing tracks of unworldly mechanisms. Together Siren and Spike travel the land following the paths of the destructive metal ones, relaying their movements to the forest territorial army.

‘They hadn’t tampered with her natural beauty, yet somehow they had succeeded in heightening it ... She wore eye make-up and her hair was fuller, like a lion’s mane. She still looked every inch the lady, but she was exciting now’
