About me: The Inside Books Project is an all-volunteer nonprofit sending free books to Texas prisoners since 1998.
At the Inside Books Project, we work with prisoners to create change,
both in their lives and in the system that has incarcerated them.
Books will be the agents of that change.
In 2005, over 150,000 people were incarcerated in the state of Texas.
Out of 106 prison facilities, only 85 were equipped with libraries.
Many facilities have little or nothing to offer in important areas
like African-American and Mexican-American history, GED and other
standardized test training, coping with specific medical conditions,
and art/craft instruction. The Inside Books Project fills that gap,
providing prisoners with free books in these and other subject areas.
Last year, we sent over 18,000 books to individual prisoners—and we're
growing fast.
We aim to help prisoners make successful transitions into society. At
the same time, we stand outside the state apparatus as an important
independent source of resources, information, and ideas. A good book
earns a reader's trust and provokes reflection and inquisitiveness
that better equips the reader for life in and out of society. As an
organization, we try to emulate that approach. By responding to the
curiosity and needs of individual prisoners, we aim to minimize
bureaucracy and engage each prisoner's mind outside of the context of
a "correctional system."
Who I'd like to meet: Book lovers, prison advocates, activists, fun loving volunteers, and anyone who wants to meet us!
Hi there! I could use all the advice I can get from you. Ha! I have been sending books to inmates for about a year now on a small scale. I also have a free pen-pal service for them. If any of you would like to volunteer....give me a shout. Take a look at my blogs and pick out a pen pal and pick up a pen! Take care.
Hi there! Have you picked an inmate to write to yet? We need pen-pals. Things here at WPBP are going good though. We have had a lot of generous people donate books and magazines this week. All of the women were so excited to receive their book packages this past week. I also have had several of the inmates adopted...that is what we call it when someone selects a pen-pal. LOL
Hope you are having a great weekend!

You know the people that say utopia isn't possible have already given up. Living sustainably in balance with our environment and food sources will bring us the freedom to live in harmony, and provide the opportunity for all to excel in their efforts, dreams and life path. Utopia is not only possible but it is the very essence that should guide our dreams and vision for ourselves and with each other. It is the horizon we should all strive for everyone and every nation. Anything short of that will lead us astray.
Please Help Save Our Theatre. In 2001, Victor Sobchak and Andy McQuade founded a theatre company at the Lion and Unicorn in Kentish Town. Over the years we have supported young actors, new writers, up and coming directors and entertained many thousands of people with bold and original theatre. In June, 2008, George Sallis, an actor who Sobchak gave his first theatre break to, surreptitiously contacted the owners of the Lion and Unicorn and offered them large amounts of money to take over the theatre. The owners accepted. It was an offer Victor Sobchak wasn't able to match. We're fighting back. Please sign our petition and help make a strike for what is good and right in this world. Many thanks http://www. ipetitions. com/petition/boycottthelionandunicorntheatre/
If you care about theatre - or just hate it when the rich think they can own anything they want - at the expense of other people's lives and happiness, PLEASE pass this on to those you know will care too.
