Hidden among the Kansas Flint Hills lies the charming little town of Cottonwood Falls. Musicians gather here weekly from all over the state to play music together. It was this and other musical gatherings that brought the members of Instant Grits together. Derrick Doty is the owner and operator of the Council Grove Barber Shop in Council Grove, KS. The only barber in Morris County to be exact. He host an Old Time/Bluegrass jam at the shop every last Tuesday of the month. This is where he met Casey Cagle, an Emporia resident and Barista at the time. They later met Kelsie and Ashlie Koehn, daughters of a Luthier in Burns, KS. Instant Grits came together suddenly for an impromptu barn dance at Camp Wood. They later joined again to play at The Fiddler's Dream music and dance camp in Kingston, OK. After their second performance, they knew they were on to something. Their high energy and choice playlist have made them a favorite at contra dances everywhere they've played.
"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
Sorry to hear about the gig. There was a big storm the day of our last CD release party, and it was supposed to be outside. It's so stressful to be at the mercy of Kansas weather.
We're sad to hear you're calling it quits. It was always great to hear you play. Have fun this weekend! Hope we'll run into you playing in different configurations before too long.
