Welcome to Interferon Force, a comic book representation of the human body's response to disease at the molecular and cellular levels. The first episode focuses on the role of interferons in the fight against a viral infection.
Interferons are part of the first line of defense against viruses. Once induced, they are secreted into their environment and help produce an antiviral state in other cells. Type I interferons can trigger the stimulation of hundreds of other genes.
A virus, such as influenza, enters a cell via interactions between its coat proteins and receptors on the cell's surface. Once inside, the flu virus uncoats, releasing its genome and viral proteins. These proteins shut down the target cell's defenses and commandeer the cell, forcing it to synthesize and assemble new viral RNA and proteins. The dying cell releases thousands of complete virions and the infection continues...
