Influences
We had reached an impasse, a metaphorical thicket of recrimination, innuendo and self doubt. The train had left the station, the car was out of gas and the bus had been pulled over on the southbound highway by forces of the state.
In between seemingly random performances in front of indifferent if not hostile audiences, we took solace in the warmth of own bodies as well as those of the animals.
During lighter moments, we spontaneously composed honorific ballads dedicated to New Jersey and its awe inspiring transportation network.
We augmented our meager incomes performing subway karoake, as well as magic and card tricks for various fraternal orders , local civic associations,
and homes for the infirm and feeble minded.
At the holiday season, we peddled multipurpose vegetable and fruit slicers, portable "pocket" fishing poles and illuminated , illustrated pop-up bibles. We worked door to door, on street corners and at the edges of state and county fair midways.
As straits became desperate, we were not above above smuggling seafood or livestock across state lines in exchange for needed cash, bartered goods or favored selling or performance locations at various flea markets and swap meets.
When all else failed, we could always resort to one of our most desperate but ultimately lucrative ventures: all night rigged poker games for participating teenage runaways and liquor addled senior citizens.
As the months and years rolled by, we began to attract a diminutive but fiercely loyal coterie of hangers-on, sympathizers, fellow travellers and lifetime boon companions. These included among others: disgruntled opera divas, retired Yiddish vaudville villians, three legged Montana workdogs, singing dwarves and gregarious Mohawk movie actors.
Eventually, after yet another aborted tour of the Eastern territories, it all came to a screeching and unceremonious halt.
Blinded by the dazzle of an imaginary entertainment utopia that shone in our eyes and minds like some mythical land of Oz, deafened by overloud guitar amps and the roar and screech of the elevated trains, we saddled up the elephants and other assorted beasts of burden and set out for one last futile ride towards happiness, critical acclaim or an undiscovered secret passageway to the New Jersey Turnpike, whichever came first.........

Sounds Like
Wise wretch!
With pleasure too refined to please
With too much spirit to e'r be at ease,
With too much quickness ever to be taught,
With too much thinking to have common thought,
You purchase pain with all that joy can give,
And die of nothing but a rage to live......
