Our Mission
To provide free life-changing surgery for children with clefts, disabling burns and hand injuries—empowering local doctors, and creating free access to surgical care where it never existed before.
The Need
The need for reconstructive surgery is great. Just as many women suffer from a severe burn each year as are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. More school-aged children die of severe burns than of malaria and tuberculosis combined. And those who live often endure a major loss of mobility: the ability to walk or raise their arms because of disabling burn scars. Moreover, one in 700 babies is born with a cleft lip or palate—and often leads a life of isolation and is denied an education because of her appearance or his speech impediment.
A Story Of Healing
In 1997, a film crew accompanied an Interplast volunteer surgical team to An Giang province in Vietnam's Mekong Delta.
A Story of Healing, earned the 1997 Academy Award for best documentary short subject.
