Appearing at the start of 2007, Interstellar Grains reflected and embodied the Balkanization of popular music that followed the relatively homogenous second half of the 1960s. Interstellar Grains name seemingly so far-out, was actually derived from the first name of cosmic dust...and thus giving birth to that infamous quote "WE ARE SPACE
ROCK!." Picking up the pieces from the bands Trip and Vacuum Tree Head Rich Corny assembeled the Interstellar Grains and wasted little time branching out into elements of Prog/Psychedelic Rock, Funk, Punk and Jazz fusion that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Because of their willingness to eschew conventional logic and push themselves into new artistic directions, instead of opting for the more marketable sounds, and because so little of their recorded material was available to the public, they relied on their highly energetic live performances. which resulted in a wave of word-of-mouth hype that elevated the band to near-mythic proportions along with a blend of spontaneity, intricate structure, personal philosophy and humor that has endured and transcended the "Progressive" tag. Their sound has become mercurial and daring in such a way that they have had few imitators; even though they have inspired many.
After a short tour, the band returned in early 2007 with it's first self titled full-length album, which, from their live set, included the ambitious four part song cycle "Circuits in Time" (an audience favorite). Their music has given a nod to such diverse influences as Frank Zappa, Mahavishnu, Pink Floyd, Serge Gainsbourg, Black Sabbath and George Harrisson to name a few and considering their well-known experimental and avant-garde leanings, the roots of Interstellar Grains were in some respects surprisingly more conventional. In the mid-'90s, Rich Corny and Justin Markovits were the basis for the band Trip, a Bay Area group that played more or less groove based funk rock as well as select covers of the day. Past Vacuum Tree Head members Michael de la Cuesta and Charles Lloyd would also become a part of Interstellar Grains, whose original material was known to reflect an odd sensibility, cultivated by their highly educated backgrounds in the study of North Indian classical music and a passion for improvised Jazz. In 2007, Galen Stagner teamed up (again) as bassist to form the second lineup of Interstellar Grains. This incarnation of the group quickly became well loved in the burgeoning Bay Area Psychedelic/Rock Underground. Some of their pop leanings didn't mean they weren't exciting or devoid of experimental elements, Surreal wordplay and unusually (for rock) complex instrumental interplay which gave an innovative edge to their ebullient early psychedelic outings, To meld the energy of Psychedelic Rock with the improvisational pulse of Jazz. With an increasingly lesser reliance on lyrics and vocals. Stagners fuzzy buzzy bass, Markovits' tight, pummeling, imaginative drumming, Lloyds vocals and electric sitar catharsis, Corny's compositions mixed with his melodic guitar liquidity and de la Cuesta's angular, surrealistic and increasingly inaccessible guitar playing paced the band on material that became too oblique for many Rolling Stones type pop/rock listeners. Though in playing for sold out audiences at san francisco's main
watering holes like the Fillmore, the Great American Music Hall and the Independent, there, they played to such a level that audiences hailed them as landmark performances and were well admired by both Progressive Psychedelic Rock and Jazz Funk aficionados. they continued to experiment, however, stretching out songs with wild instrumental freak-out passages incorporating feedback: electronic screeches, unusual, eerie sounds created by loud amplification, Moog synthesizer, reverb, Spaceballs, and such tricks as sliding a violin up and down the guitar strings.
Over the next three years, Interstellar Grains would continue to polish their brand of Experimental Rock, which married Psychedelia with ever-grander arrangements on a Mid-evil Jazz Shankarian operatic scale. Hidden underneath the pulsing, reverberant sitars and guitars and insistently restated themes were subtle Blues, Funk and French Pop influences that kept some of the material accessible to a wider audience. Using Corny's vision as an obvious blueprint, in taking a more formal, somber, and quasi-classical approach, especially in the long instrumental parts helped make Interstellar Grains easily translatable to an international audience As exemplified by its most popular act, the Beatles, and as the period of music from late 1966 to early 1972 suggests that many different aspects of popular music could be integrated into an eclectic style with a broad appeal. The Interstellar Grains are as likely to perform an Indian Raga in 7/8 as a hard rocker or a Reggae-influenced Jazz tune sung in French. with which the band has discovered a new audience eager for its uncompromising approach.
