Dour Liverpudlian rockers Echo & The Bunnymen cast a long shadow over the U.K. music scene in the late '80s and early '90s, from which many worshipful groups never emerged. Dublin quartet Into Paradise started its career well within that darkness, but later emerged (albeit briefly) with a sound worth hearing.
=================================================
The group's self-titled debut, released in 1990 and produced by ex-Sound frontman Adrian Borland, found Into Paradise--singer/guitarist Dave Long, guitarist/keyboardist James Eadie, bassist Rachel Tighe and drummer Ronan Clarke--owing a heavy debt to the Bunnymen's landmark 1980 LP, Crocodiles. The guitar sound is sometimes fuller than Echo axeman Will Sergeant's usual scratchy tone, but the plodding, weary songs and Long's unmistakably McCulloch-like caterwauling made the band's primary reference point obvious. The shame was that a few genuinely good tracks got buried in the band's attempt at homage. However, someone kicked Into Paradise firmly in the collective rear just in time for the release of Churchtown the following year--the group sounded newly-energized on uptempo, invigorating cuts like "Rain Comes Down," their best-ever song, and "Bring Me Up." Produced again by Borland, Churchtown showed off a large-scale dramatic sweep reminiscent of Simple Minds, augmented by consistently strong, attractive melodies that kept even slower tracks like "I'm Still Waiting" out of the dirgelike territory of yore.
The band followed that triumph with a pair of U.K.-only EPs--Down All The Days (1992) and For No One (1993)--before disappearing from view shortly afterwards. But Into Paradise's short time in the limelight should, if nothing else, give hope to those numerous groups striving nobly to elude the creative noose of their influences. ++++ Written by Dan Leroy

thnx for adding.... it's been a long time searching for you... do you remember winning the "ruhr-rock"? that's been my moment falling in love with your music, especially "gently falls"...no way to describe how this song improved my life...
dearly yours n. atas
p.s. : is there any recording of your concert at the "ruhr-rock" existing, except mine mono-taped-tv-version????
Into Paradise! Churchtown was one of the soundtracks to my youth! It also without doubt was a big influence on my own stuff back in the early 90s, as you'll maybe see from our page... I have the album on vinyl but no player and for the last week I've been humming 'Gently Falls' and needed to hear it again, it's been 15 years!
oh god was looking through my CD collection whilst drinking rose wine and found your album churchtown and the single listed on your music section, love it, never got to see you guys, i only arrived in dublin in a band called the bedhangers around 1994 and gigged here till the band split and i made it my home
But i always wanted to see you guys as i liked what i heard, another great band who never made it big, what is it with irish bands? Ghost of an American airman was another i couldnt believe never made it superbig, makes me question my whole perspective on music, are the rest of society mad or just stupid, i reckon its the latter!!
I..m sorry for the trouble, but someone must have cracked my password and sent comments in my name. I..m sorry for that! Would you please be so kind and delete "my" comment?
so a friend directed me to your site and i immediately fell in love and went online and ordered the self titled album as well churchtown. i'm excited!!!
It´s me again... Now I realize it´s not the song I meant. I meant the slow version of "The world won´t stop". That´s confusing... And how come I heard "Gently Falls" on this profile but can´t add it, because it´s not in the list? Where do you hide it ;)
The Circus Came To Town! And you came to The Venue in Derry but went down like the man taking the television away from the hospital ward. I, however, was a believer and I knew you'se were class. You were a bit of brightness in those times. Won't LTM or Cherry Red or Renascence do a reissue programme? Hope all is OK with you all.
Sometimes, it´s strange :)
I just read your bulletin and thought of just checking by and then I heard "Angelus". Then, I found out that I don´t know this song and that I even don´t have the album "Setana" but just "Churchtown and IP".
Then I tried Amazon, but wasn´t succesful.
How can I buy this album?
It really irritates me everytime they print a list of The Best Irish Albums Ever and they leave out Into Paradise.
Seeing the band play at The LSE in London 1991 was more like a religious experience than a rock concert.
Why is it the best bands disappear off the face of the earth and the average ones go on and on?
Wow, that´s great! Thaaank you so much for going for the trouble of putting the song online :)
I haven´t managed to add it so far, because I think the "add-" button is deactivated.
Nevertheless: As soon as it works again, I´ll take "All Down From Here" as my background music :)
Thank you for "being my friend" :)
I like your music!
Could you maybe put "Yesterday´s Men" or "All Down From Here" online so that I could use one of them as background music on my page?
In case it´s too much work, never mind.
Hello,
thanks for the add :)
"churchtown" is a great album...forever :)
It's great you put "the DELILAHS" on your top friends...I love them :)
Cheers,
Chris
