Rugged One, calls his music cinematic hip-hop and certainly it has the pride, scope and power to warrant such a description. Epic concepts delivered with unstoppable beats and precision lyricism envelope the listener in a world of tightly knit music. Rugged One is the new hip-hop prophet.
Therapy
Rugged One attributes the quality of his life to music. Without it, his life would be destitute, he says. “Music to me can be described as therapy; without it in my life, I would be lost.” Rugged One uses music as a way of confronting problems and finding emotional resolution. “I can work through issues surrounding my life and lay them all out through melodies and harmonies in my tracks.”
Pain and Joy
As much as we want to exist in a world of joy, the simple fact of the matter is that life is full of hardship to. So it is wise that artist Rugged One looks to both sides of life, embracing its duality, to find inspiration for his musicianship. “Life inspires me: pain, love, heartache, loss, joy, world issues … life.”
The Artist at Work
Rugged One has collaborated with St. Laz, “a huge force in the underground scene in New York City.” Rugged One is part of New Industry North, a collective of Canada’s top producers. In the works is the New Industry North Mixtape, featuring artists both domestic and abroad. The creative process for Rugged One involves free flow of artistic energy. “Everything I produce is completely original. I sit in front of my equipment and let the day’s emotions and events be released through the notes I play.” It’s all about the music, says Rugged One. He’s not in it for the fame. It’s about the art. Rugged One is currently working with A&R Select, the leading A&R firm in Hollywood, CA.
