many dancers and drummers.
And you!
InfluencesDancing is our way we interpret the world around us, document memorable moments, solve conflicts, show respect to spiritual world, ask for safe and successful hunts, or simply just to stay active and entertained during the long, cold, dark winter months. When the singers tell the story or sing the song, the dancers "paint the picture" with coinsiding arm and neck movements making the story come to life. There are many dance groups that we've had the privilege of watching and interacting with that influence the way we sing and dance, such as Miracle Drummers & Singers, Suurimaanitchut, Chevak, and Pamyua; and since members of our group come from all over Alaska (and out of state and country too), we are also influenced by each of their hometowns as well.
Sounds LikeTraditional Alaskan Native songs.

   About Iñu-Yupiaq
Iñu-Yupiaq is a unique Alaskan Native dance group based in Fairbanks, Alaska and is made up of students and alumni of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. We come from all across the state and beyond. We have representation from right here in Fairbanks, and other interior villages nearby like Tanana and Nenana, from the Northwest places like Nome, Teller and Noatak, down in the Southwest areas like Pilot Station, Togiak and Emmonak, even places in the lower 48 and beyond including Katchatka and Europe. Our group was named Iñu-Yupiaq because we primarily dance and sing both Iñupiaq and Yup'ik (Yupiaq) songs. It was formed in 1995 by a group of students who wanted to keep their culture alive while attending college and continues to serve that purpose by students today. Anyone who is taking at least 1 credit at UAF or is an alumni can join the dance group and is encouraged to participate in this alcohol and drug free environment.
