"A Jazz-Pop songstress with a penchant for sitting astride a piano in a glittery gown, her jaunty, sophisticated musings a joy to behold." (The Glasgow Slow Club, Dec '09)
Iona Bain is a jazz/pop performer, songwriter, producer, 'cellist and pianist. She recently performed at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow as part of the UNESCO City of Music celebrations and has played on sold-out bills at venues across Glasgow, including Tchai Ovna and the Captains Rest (where acts such as Frightened Rabbit and the XX have recently played). She was shortlisted for the nationwide Rock Against Racism competition with Paulo Nutini and has been selected for the Your Sound scheme at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut. She will feature in a forthcoming Glasgow Culture and Sport documentary and will be playlisted and interviewed on the Detour Scotland Podcasts.
Iona is also a composer and was approached by the Edinburgh Samaritans to write a piece to celebrate the charity’s 50th birthday after performing classical arrangements of her songs in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival of Spirituality. The piece was premiered in a “Youth Music” concert with ex-Blue Peter presenter Romana D’Annunzio at St Marys Cathedral in November '09. Iona also performed at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow that month alongside UK performance ensemble Music At The Brewhouse, which has featured, amongst others, BBC Concert Orchestra guest leader Charles Mutter and folk musician Mairi Campbell. Iona worked with composers Stephen Deazley and David Knotts in the run-up to the event, which also featured acts like This Silent Forest and Patricia Panther. Iona is currently home producing all her own arrangements via a Roland studio keyboard. She will be performing with her band The Art Deco in 2010; upcoming gigs include 13th Note, One Creative Scotland and Acoustic Edinburgh, alongside gigs as a 'cellist and keyboard player.
