Where else can you find more than 30 different choices of food-on-a-stick, nearly 200 food stands, five stages of free entertainment, top-notch Grandstand concerts and thousands of prime locations for people-watching? The Iowa State Fair boasts the largest foods department of any state fair, plus one of the world’s largest livestock shows, the largest arts show in the state and a mammoth 20-acre farm machinery show.
Running 11 days in August, the Fair has been held almost continuously since 1854. It is Iowa’s largest event and is frequently listed among the top events in the nation. Midwest Living magazine named the event one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience” and in 2005 the Fair was named the #2 choice for summer fun in America by USA Weekend. It is also included in the new travel book Amazing Places to Go in North America and in the New York Times best-selling travel book 1000 Places to See Before You Die.
