What is IpswichLETS?
We are a collection of people from Ipswich exchange goods and services as an alternative form of economic exchange. We barter goods and services using a virtual currency called Skillings
LETS stands for Local Exchange & Trading System. The idea originated in Canada in 1982 and since then hundreds of local community currencies like ours have sprouted up all over the world.
Why LETS?
LETS appeals to a wide range of people for different reasons.
Some members use LETS because they don't have lots of £££s but do have time and energy - everyone has access to skillings.
Others use LETS because they want to do something community focused and meet new people.
Some members see LETS as a way of replacing global capitalist economies with local community driven ones.
LETS is a healthy, sustainable and democratic form of economic relationship. Our system builds trust and creates new social networks.
Skillings are very different to £££s. There is no penalty for having a negative balance no reward for having a positive balance. When you make a transaction you are creating skillings!
IpswichLETS is cooperatively owned by all members and administrated by volunteers.
How does LETS work?
First you need to become a member. Then you can advertise offers and make requests.
We host monthly skillshares, which helps trading and building relationships. We also have a googlegroup where you can keep up with the latest offers and wants.
You record trades in your account book. As a member you have access to details of other members so you can contact people offering things that you want and they can contact you.
"But I have nothing to offer"
A lot of people think this before they join LETS. But, we believe everyone has something to offer! To get you started:
Think about your hobbies, passions and interests. You may be able to help someone who is just getting started with the same interest. Can you make things? Knit? Sew? Bake cakes? Do you grow your own food or flowers? All of these can be exchanged for Skillings. Are you good at DIY or willing to lend a hand with gardening or cleaning? Can you water plants, feed pets, help with shopping?
Come along to the skillshares and see what else is being offered, we're sure you'll soon have loads of ideas.
