The Irchester Sex Panthers records date back to the early 1970s when the 'Sex Panthers Gentleman's club' was created as a result of the amalgamation of the Irchester 'Sex Pistols Fan Club' and the Wollaston 'Panther Conservation Society”.
The club was held on a Wednesday night in the church hall and was originally frequented by a large number of polish migrants. The club ran successfully until 1987 when it was forced to disband by the government for taking an unpopular stance on the Falklands war.
The panthers were reformed in the early 1990's as a crack team sent on an unsuccessful mission to assassinate key political figures in Iraq, their failure resulted in what is now widely regarded as the 'Gulf war'.
The panthers remained a largely dormant organisation until 2005 when they were reformed by K.Batley and captain J.Grove as an indoor cricket team. They now play once a week every winter in Steve Brady's Bats and Balls Centre indoor league,
The first (winter 05) season did not go well for the "Panthers". The tactic of playing well in the grading game then turning up after a few beers and playing like cowboys during the season failed miserably and saw them spanked all the way to the bottom of division 2.
Winter 2006 they turned up after a few beers and played like cowboys in the grading game, then batted, bowled and smiled their way to the top of division three wearing some spiffing new 'candy pink' shirts sporting the new club logo provided by club sponsor RAM SPORTS….the only REAL sports shop in Wellingborough.
The "SpringSeason 06" saw the Panthers Promoted to division 2 which they won with only one loss all season. Winter 07 saw the Panthers finish Mid table in Div 1.
The Panthers are currently un sure as to whether they will be entering a side into the indoor league this year, but remain active as a social and drinking club.... as well as an exibition side... a bit like like the Harlem Globe Trotters!
