Today's roller derby is a grassroots, all-female, flat track, contact sport played on quad roller skates. The game is played with five skaters from each team on the track. At the starting line you have the Pack, which is made up of blockers from both teams. You have the Pivot in front with a striped helmet cover, she's basically like the mother hen for the pack, she sets the pace. Then behind the Pivots you have the Blockers from both teams. The Blockers' duties are to clear a way for their Jammer while blocking the other team's Jammer. And of course blocking anyone who's not on their team. Twenty feet (Six meters) behind the back of the pack are the Jammers, ith a star cover on their helmets. They are the only skater on the track who can score points for her team. When the second whistle goes off, the Jammers race off to be the first one to break through the pack legally. The first Jammer through the pack legally is the Lead Jammer and has the right to call off the jam at anytime. Both jammers can score points by legally passing the opposing skaters, hence why she wants to lap the pack as my times possible.
