  • Bio

Heavenly harmonies, soulful singing, stories of the woman's journey and the chance to sing along are what you will find when you discover Iris. There may also be laughs, a few tears and everything in between! Iris perform music influenced by a range of genres including folk, gospel, blues & celtic, and their repertoire features both their own beautiful original compositions as well as songs from other performers they love! Iris is a six-piece all-girl musical group who has evolved from their a'cappella roots to performing with touches of guitar, piano, ukulele, oboe, recorder & various percussion. However, their passion for intricate harmonies ensures the creative emphasis is firmly on voice! Iris have been festival favourites over the past 5 years at events such as Fairbridge Festival, Bridgetown Blues Festival & Denmark Festival of Voice. Iris are Jo Allen, Kris Arnott, Carmel Bain, Coralie Kan, Sarah Tunzi & Karen Winton The relaxed vibe was further enhanced by Iris, a five-part female a cappella group, their voices blended in beautiful arrangements of originals and gospel numbers. Their candid sharing, warm personalities and stunning voices made them instant crowd-pleasers. (The West Australian)

There is huge diversity between us in what we listen to and are influenced by! Here are a few to start with and we'll add more soon. First of all Karen was inspired to form Iris after seeing the amazing Australian group Akasa perform at Fairbridge Festival in about 2002/03. We also think Coco's Lunch are awe inspiring. Other influences over the years have been Steeleye Span, The Fagans, Eva Cassidy, Cara Dillon, Cassandra Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, The Wailin Jennys, EastMountainSouth, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Eric Bibb, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, Nickel Creek and heaps more. We also love the songwriting and singing of Australian Michael Kennedy, and we have to say we love Andrew Winton as well!
