   Irish Cara Club's Blurbs
About me:
The Irish Cara organization was founded in 1993. The goal of this club was to be a point of reference for people in the upstate community interested in Irish culture. While most of the members who make up this group are of Irish descent, there was never any intent to make any entry restrictions to non-Irish members. Irish people have traversed all corners of this earth and have integrated with every culture, therefore the club embraced a policy of 'all are welcome'. The name 'Cara' is the Gaelic word for friend and was chosen by a vote among the first club members. The club adapted the Harp, the ancient symbol of Ireland as the club's emblem. The club by-laws or 'Brehons' to borrow an old word were loosely formed providing for annual elections of officers, yearly membership dues, and an official understanding that the club would be a non-political, multi denominational, equal opportunity Organization. The first officers of the club were Marty Flynn serving as President, Robert Maguire as Vice-President, and Vance Drawdy ( RIP) as Secretary. Succeeding presidents included Maureen Normoyle, Clare Dillon-Palma, Phil Connelly, Ken Flanagan, mary McGory, Gail Hediger and Emily Flynn, nearly all of whom are still current members. Current Officers: President: Mike Long, Vice President: Patrick Walsh, Executive Advisor: Marty Flynn, Treasurer: Jean Aldridge, Secretary: Clare Dillon-Palma, Webmaster: Mike Long. In 1994 the concept of creating an Irish Festival was put forward and became a reality in March 1996 and has grown to become one Greenville's finest family events. So now each March, the Irish Cara Club and with the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation Departments sponsors an annual family celebration of Irish culture. Located in Falls Park, this one-day event occurs the Sunday prior to St. Patrick's Day. In 2008, the celebration was held from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, and it included live Celtic music, bagpipes, Irish food and drink and a variety of children's activities. The Band Need Fire who's great blend of Rock and Celtic sounds, that you are listening to now, played live!!! If you or any one you know is interested in becoming a member please contact me on this page or visit us at http://www.irishcaraclub.com.
