About me:
Don Sullivan
Don was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland.
As a young man, during the 'showband era' in Ireland, he played with 'The Truetones', 'The Swing Earls', 'The Polka Dots', and 'The Gonks'.
He then moved to Canada where he was invited to join 'The Maple Leaf Showband'. After this he formed his own band 'Skylight' at a time when Irish folk music was gaining in popularity in North America with groups like 'The Clancy Brothers', 'The Irish Rovers', and 'The Sons Of Erin'.
It was also at this time that Don began writing his own songs, which brought him to the attention of folk musicians, Gary Kavanagh, Fergus O'Byrne, and Dermot O'Reilly. They got together and formed the very popular, and successful, 'Sullivan's Gypsies'.
Don's writing was beginning to be influenced more by Contemporary Folk Music (intermingled with a mixture of Rock and Country) and when performing as a solo artist he was afforded the opportunity to perform them for his audience. As a result of their popularity he was contracted to record an album for Boot Records, Toronto.
This was to be an historic event, as it would mean that Don would be the first (and to date) the only Irishman to have recorded an album of his own original songs in Nashville Tennessee.
The recording took place in Elvis Presley's favourite studio at RCA; studio B.
Musicians, 'Lightnin' Floyd Chance, Hargus 'Pig' Robbins, Charlie McCoy, Jimmy Capps, Ray Edenton, Jerry Shook, Willie Ackerman, Jerry Whitehurst, along with the world famous background vocalists, 'The Jordanaires' were some of the 'legends' to have performed on that album, and a track 'Lady of the Night' sat at number 3 for nine weeks on CFGM while Chris Christopherson and Gordon Lightfoot were at number 1 and 2. (Not bad for a young man from Omagh).
Since returning to Ireland Don has continued to write songs, and released a number of them on cassette under the 'Stud' label; 'Born to Hang'. That collection is now being re-recorded and will be released on CD in the near future, as will a selection from his original Nashville recording; 'Sullivan Dreams'.
His writing has also taken Don into the world of film. Since writing the script for 'Tit for Tat' (a short film for the internationally renowned Foyle Film Festival) he has appeared in a number of films made for television (see list).
Sullivan is the first to admit that he has been around a few corners, but regardless of the personal problems he has had to overcome in his private life, he has somehow always managed (in his own words) 'to stay ahead of the posse'.
