About me:
The Irish School of Lutherie was set up in 1980 to train individuals in instrument construction in a working instrument maker’s factory. It was found that the students learned more from a busy workshop environment than from textbooks or a clinical school atmosphere. at that time only one pupil could attend for the 12-week course due to factory size. Nowadays up to 5 people are catered for at the same time. Instrument making in the Doyle family started with Paul’s grandfather making violins in 1890 in Westport, Co. Mayo, Ireland. In 1922 his father Frank, and Frank’s two brothers William (died 1936) and Thomas (died 1959) began making violins. Paul dabbled in electric guitars from 1971-1975 but started seriously in 1976. Paul studied Maccaferri guitar construction under Albert Nibblett in London in 1977, and classical guitar in Tufnell Park. While living in Manchester, he studied violin/viola construction under Alfred Baker, and Early, Renaissance and Baroque instruments with Northern Renaissance Instruments under Dr Ephraim Segerman! Paul has done extensive research into instrument construction and is developing new products continually. He has made instruments for customers all over the world, and among these are U2, Hothouse Flowers, Christy Moore, and the Big Geraniums. The courses can start on the Monday of each week anytime from January to December. The first two weeks are spent designing the instrument, making moulds and jigs, followed by intensive instruction on building techniques and final varnishing and set up of the completed instrument. All moulds and completed parts are the property of the student and arrangements must be made for transport of goods home. Materials are available for most instruments, but in some countries, the wood and fittings can be bought more cheaply. Students are advised when booking to discuss instrument requirements. Reference books, drawings, video instruction and addresses of suppliers are available, and students can write up any information necessary in their work. There is also a wide range of hand and machine tools available and instruction on safety and use is given. As the instruction is carried out in a busy workshop, students can see repairs carried out and instruments being made on a day-to-day basis. Instruments Covered Guitars, acoustic, classical and Arch top Dobro, Resonator Guitar Electric Guitar/Bass Mandolin, Mandola, Mando Cello. Bouzouki, Hammered Dulcimer and Appalachian Dulcimer, Harp, Wire/Gut Hurdy Gurdy Early instruments, = Lute, cittern, Gamba, etc. Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass Galway is the music capital of Ireland and therefore there are lots of pubs to go to, with every kind of music from Blues to Traditional, Cajun and Rock, can be heard 7 nights a week. If you intend to socialise or go nightclubbing, although great fun, it is not cheap! A pint of Guinness costs €4 and an average dinner costs €10. The last Friday of the course is presentation night. The students receive their certificate in a local restaurant or bar and friends, wives and husbands are also invited. The instrument is shown and an appraisal given. I.S.O.L. The 4 string zouk was developed in the'60s,everybody says by Manolis Hiotis, but i've heard it was a cooperation of his teacher, his maker (of course, hehe) and Hiotis.
Anyway,no other could play souch a
thing so well as he did,he was a great guitar player before grabing the bouzouki, and his worldwide musical influences were much bigger than any other Greek player.
Master Zozef (R.i.p.),was the star maker of Hiotis bouzoukis, but i think he wasn't involved in the
changing of bouzoukis,he just
made it better, his zouks are still
the best!

Hmmm..flat vs round..
Well..me,i stand for curves,hehe!
But in the bouzoukis case, the details make for sure the difference, and give the personality of the instrument...
There's a theory about the Greek
zouk,: that it came from the Italian mandolin, and not from the
Turkish insts that look like it!
Anyway,Turks call "buzuk" anything broken or wrong, this is where the bouzouki's name came from, because the eastern musicians did not accept the western scales!
Well,nothing western was
accepted in those
dark ages!

Ooops!
Anyway,well done,
somebody must show banjo players
that there can be another banjo sound, without theese ugly "metallic" highs...
I think you should promote
the banzola a little more!
I had no idea about it..!
I bet there's thousands
like me out there!

Hello to you my friend! My comment is to bring,to debate, issues I feel are very important, concerning the lisbon treaty.Below are a three videos. The first is very short(3 min)and is of an MEP who sees the "Totalitarian nature of this treaty"

The second is a documentary called "The real face of the European Unio" which is very important as it outlines, once again by MEP's,"An unsettleing Agenda" from an EU that is "Rotten to the Core"
..
The Third is from a group of Irishmen. "End of Nations". It is an excellent documentary and it outlines the Lisbon treaty in full.Once again interviews with MEP's. Just be prepared to be a little shocked.

..
I'd encourage you to repost this comment If you feel it is of value. I will be posting a bulletin with the details and code of this comment.Press reply to bulletin, copy and paste the message, then repost as a comment. Thanks for taking the time to read this! Baz.....
