The Iron Guild, a renegade band of iron casters, was formed in January of 2003 by a group of students while attending Massachusetts College of Art. The Guild has since graduated, and produced over a dozen events across New England, from simple iron foundry demonstrations to site-specific performances. The Iron Guild has become a local legend in and around Boston and a notable member of the contemporary iron casting movement.

River of Iron
Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. In the courtyard of the school, we constructed two, twelve-foot-tall furnaces with a plywood form suspended between them. The furnaces were tapped simultaneously, and the iron filled a mold located underneath the plywood form, and then eventually filled the plywood itself, creating a bridge of iron suspended between the two furnaces.

Into the Deep The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, Rutland, VT. On a cliff overlooking a former marble quarry, we constructed a furnace out of natural materials and supplies found on-site; clay, sticks, mud, sand, rocks and bricks. When we tapped the furnace, the iron fell 40 feet to the water below, and then sank to the bottom of the 300 ft deep quarry.
