"Books that fuel revolutions. Books that teach us how to care for our bodies and spirits. Books that remind us to protect our air, water, and trees. Books that break our hearts and expand our minds. Because, the revolution will not be televised, it will be live, and it will be written as well. Let's open ourselves to the ideas that the written word can bring. And then let's have some conversations about it."

The Iron Rail is a collectively owned and operated, all-volunteer bookstore, lending library, and community space in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in December 2003, we are committed to anarchist, anti-authoritarian, feminist, queer-positive, class-conscious, and anti-racist politics, and to providing alternative literature and information to the people of New Orleans. The Iron Rail is organized in a way that puts theory into practice. We believe in a world without domination and oppression and in working to undermine authoritarian structures of power. As an anarchist collective, the Iron Rail has no bosses or managers. Group decisions are made collectively in weekly meetings, and members are encouraged to be creative in initiating individual projects. The bookstore is operated by volunteers who believe in the importance of establishing alternatives to capitalism, while creating new public spaces and supporting community projects.

Our lending library is one of the largest collectively-run radical libraries in the country. We were also the first library in the city to re-open after Hurricane Katrina, and for several months we were the only functioning library in New Orleans. We have over 7,000 titles on a wide variety of topics. This collection was assembled over the course of 10 years; much of it was inherited from the Crescent Wrench Infoshop that operated in New Orleans during the 1990s. These books are available for check-out; all you need is a library membership card. We are also home to the Above Ground Zine Library, a mind-blowing collection of thousands of rare and hard-to-find zines and small-press/alternative magazines dating back to the 1960s.

We no longer have computers, internet, or wireless, but we do offer delicious free Santa's Blend coffee. Our front room is available for community groups to hold meetings; let us know if you’d like to schedule use of the space.

If you’re interested in helping out or joining the collective, come by our weekly meetings which are held every Wednesday at 8:00 PM. We also welcome donations of books and supplies.

Get out from behind your computer and engage the world...
you'll feel better.
Computers were designed to make you sick and ruin your relationships with other people. Reject technology. Sprawl out and read a book somewhere pleasant, instead!

Oh, mysterious Iron Rail. I like how your comment on my blog was actually a plug to rep you at Santa Cruz. Of course I would any day. Even though I told Long Haul I wouldn't and I have been staffing there longer than I did at the Iron Rail. Who cares? I'm going to gather up my notes from that and send them along soon if you're interested.

Shit, Iron Rail, I miss you! Saint John is distinctly lacking in anarchist bookstore/libraries. Has James started his line of exclusive crawfish-themed merchandise yet?

Just wanted to let you (and your comment-reading friends) know that GUD Issue 1 is now available for purchase!

Issue 1 comes to life with Darby Larson's "Electroencephalography" where an experiment in robot-building goes terribly awry. And if you've ever woken up with an unexpected physical deformity—say, an arrow in your heart—you'll truly enjoy the next story. There's also a smattering of flash fiction and psychedelia; a straight-out story where things aren't what they seem, poetry that takes you from the perverse to the sublime, some magic realism, science fiction, and a few letters to another species thrown in for good measure. We haven't forgotten those of you with a literary bent. In addition, the artwork in this issue is particularly strong, with oil paintings, watercolors, photography, and photo illustrations complementing the words with which they are paired.

Thanks for being a friend!
