   About Irving Fields

Trained in the prime years of Tin Pan Alley and immersed in the classic American popular music of the pre-World War II era, IRVING FIELDS is one of the last of a truly special generation, who continues to perform to this day.

His "lounge" credentials placed him in the top tier of pianists who played NYC’s finest hotels and society rooms in the ’40s and ’50s, borne out by his classic trio records like "The Irving Fields Trio At The Emerald Room."

Then there are his legendary solo cocktail piano skills that allow him to play virtually any request from the audience, from Jerome Kern to Billy Joel, and seamlessly string together snippets of tunes from disparate eras and styles to form masterfully flawless medleys.

His hit songs joined Latin, jazz and popular music, resulting in such international hits as "Miami Beach Rhumba" and "Managua Nicaragua," which was taken to Number 1 on the Billboard charts not once but twice in 1947. In the ’50s and ’60s, his series of world fusion records that artfully combined Latin rhythms with Jewish music (Bagels and Bongos), Italian music (Pizza and Bongos), French music (Champagne and Bongos) and Hawaiian music (Bikinis and Bongos) remain immortal ’50s period pieces and influential precursors to today’s world music.

Irving has appeared on countless coast-to-coast radio broadcasts; on TV variety shows hosted by Milton Berle, Kate Smith and Jackie Gleason; at the Roxy Theatre, London Palladium and Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; and a little place Carnegie Hall (New York) over half a dozen times.

In the days when many New York hotels did live radio broadcasts, Fields found a home at the Park Sheraton, and stayed for there 16 years. He has been and remains a fixture in Manhattan hotels ever since, including performing at the Plaza Hotel for 8 years, the Sheraton for 3 years, the Intercontenental Hotel for 1-1/2 years, the Park Lane Hotel for 2 years, and since 2005 at Nino’s Tuscany, an Italian restaurant steps from his midtown apartment.

The latest and, in many ways, the most remarkable chapter of Irving’s career has taken place over the last couple of years. He signed to downtown jazz legend John Zorn’s Tzadik Records label in 2006 and has recorded two critically acclaimed albums in his archetypal "Judeo-Latino" style, "Oy Vey! Ole!" (with Roberto Rodriguez) and "My Yiddishe Mama’s Favorites." And in 2008, the 92-year-old Fields became an Internet sensation when a video of him playing his latest song, "You Tube Dot Com," was featured on YouTube’s homepage; to date it’s been viewed over 700,000 times and has given Irving Fields his biggest "hit" in almost half a century.

As one critic recently wrote, "His hair may be white now, and he may walk a little slower than he did back in 1948, but nobody’s told his fingers that the rest of him is 92 years old. He still plinks the keys with as much finesse and flair as he did 60 years ago."
