Ken - the happiest man on the Island.'s Interests
General

  • Sports cars and racing - particularly Formula 1, CART/INDY and the American Le Mans endurance series (My first car was a '51 MGTD
  • Recreational dragonboating
  • Digital photography.
  • Chaterham Super 7s

I have always loved climbing into a fast roadster and spending a few hours driving on winding mountain roads... the exhaust note, wind in the hair and the sheer exhilaration are absolutely addicting.

Exotic sourdough cultures fascinate me.

I love my Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker, which makes the best turkey you've ever tasted!

Music

My tastes are eclectic, although Chicago Blues (particularly Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, BB King...) has always been number one on my chart. I'm fond of Celtic sounds, particularly Davy Spillane, and "New Country" from the early 90s. Opera and classical music pretty well rounds it out... I'm not big on jazz, although the mellow sounds I call "late night necking music" still move me.

Movies

  • My Fair Lady (YAY Audrey Hepburn!)
  • The African Queen
  • Night at the Opera (Marx Brothers)
  • Godfather I and II
  • Casablanca
  • Battle of Britain
  • Dirty Harry (and almost everything else Clint Eastwood has done)
  • Goodfellas
Television

Wow! After watching TV for nearly 60 years, I'm not even going to TRY to cover anything but highlights! The Oldies: Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, George & Gracie Burns, Honeymooners, Gleason, Mash... More current: I think Sopranos was the best TV has had to offer, enjoy Dexter, too... The CSI's, which requires suspending belief in reality for the duration, Law & Order...FoxNews *and* CNN..

Books

Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Time Enough for Love" top my Sci-Fi list, and Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" is right up there. I'm a big Ludlum fan, too. "The Hiram Key" fascinated me, and I recommend it to anyone wanted their mind bent.

Other books of interest:

Heroes

George S. Patton, Colin Powell, George Haines, Stirling Moss, Michael Schumacher

Baking with sourdough

OK, I admit it. I'm hooked on sourdough!

Who I'd like to meet:

I'd like to take a drive down the Coast Highway with Stirling Moss, chat with John McCain & Barack Obama about what's wrong with American politics... re-connect with survivors from Santa Clara Union High School's Class of '58 (God, was it really 50 years ago?), discerning folks from around the world, and anyone gutsy enough to want to paddle a dragonboat.

to believe in the incredible
and that permits you to receive

Manifesto!

At the crossroads of the world, where the avenue of bourgeois unbridled consumerism, of north-European descent, converges with the Pre-Hispanic warrior’s and old Spain’s  aristocratic spirituality; where East and West stand face to face and watch each other puzzled, at a distance; where post-industrial north and yet industrializing South find each other on a savage embrace; a fistful of official-art’s voluntary exiles, have come together to change the world. In the city of Tijuana, we have grouped under the UAN collective. We call all true artists, all free man and woman, all human spirits, to bring down the tyranny of ignorance, of social schizophrenia and join our efforts to re-build reality, to re-conquer the freedom of art, and give it back its role as a social instrument for re-definition and change.

In the midst of darkness and chaos, caused by the clash of the dying positivist-bourgeois paradigm with the religious-Medieval, that refuses to die completely, we proclaim a new paradigm. We denounce all psychologists that try to have bad psychology work pass for art, so they may not be criticized by other psychologists; the sociologists that intend to have bad sociology consider art, not to be criticized by their peers; the anthropologists that pretend to be artists when they can’t think of something better, social activists that pretend to make art, so they can meddle with communities without responsibility nor respect;  bad critics that make poetic criticism (that is bad as poetry and useless as criticism), but allows them to escape being criticized in turn. Curators that think themselves artists, that appropriate our work, deform it and exploit us like we were prostitutes; without having the courage, in turn, to call themselves artists, and be thus, subject to the same conditions as us. All official art-institution’s leaders, all ‘experts’ that entangle themselves in endless mental juggling, alienating the public from art, turning

TRANSLATE-ONESELF

A part of me
Is everybody:
Another part is no one:
Bottomless bottom.

A part of me
Is a crowd:
Another part is strangeness
And loneliness.

A part of me
weights, considers:
another part
is delirious.

A part of me
Has lunch and diner:
another part
gets scared.

A part of me
is permanent:
another part
suddenly realizes itself.

A part of me
Is just vertigo:
another part
language.

To translate one part
Into the other
- which is a question
of life or death –¿will that be art?

Fences make good neighbors… and they also make prisoners. We build fences to detach ourselves from the shortcomings of others, their problems and needs, but we cannot hold misery with a wall; the taller, thicker and stronger we make it, the more it conceals from us the upturns of others, their freedom, their solidarity and happiness, so we cannot see that we are becoming as entrapped and miserable as those we intended to keep outside.

In a society where honest, hardworking people are the majority, fences and locks are not needed, and it is not by locking ourselves in that we can make this kind of world, but by going out and making ties, bonding and holding ourselves and others responsible for what our sets of values bring to us all as a species.
