Acoustica are Andy and Catherine Higgins. We write our own material which we sing and play on our acoustic instruments, mainly guitars, violins, accordion, tiple, and occasionally dobro, mandolin, ukulele and bouzouki. Our personal tastes are varied - Andy likes progressive rock bands like Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator, songwriters like Jackson Browne, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young and Peter Hammill, guitarists like Martin Simpson, Steve Hackett and Ry Cooder etc. Cath likes singers Marc Almond, Kate Bush, David Gray, Sheryl Crow, bands such as Clannad, Crowded House, Show of Hands etc.
You are likely to hear about 70% self-penned songs, 30% covers in a typical Acoustica set, and we hope that in our fashion we sound both unique and entertaining!!
Loosely we could be described as new-contemporary folk (!?!)

"...from the genuinely lovely opener 'Welcome' you pass the 'Lighthouse' and on through Andy's 'Hometown' before settling back to hear Cathy's reflections on a magical 'Glastonbury' festival. Haunting melodies with ethereal harmonies, fluid fiddle passages melt into gorgeous guitar lines. It's good." (Mike Ollier - Get Rhythm)
Acoustica have released two CD albums "Welcome To..." and 'The Oban Sessions'. Both are available from our website www.itsacoustica.com where you can hear excerpts and read reviews. 'Welcome To..' is also available from ROOTS MUSIC, NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE and of course at gigs.
Thank you very much for the Link Up & Sharing Your Music

Good to see you at our CD launch at Netherton Folk Club on Saturday and also good to hear you play... sounds as though the shredded finger is well recovered!
It was a grand night, especially sharing the celebration with Jack's birthday (the 'icing on the cake')... and it was great to have him join us on the 'One More Song' encore.
Look forward to catching up with you again - keep us updated with progress on your new CD, and reserve us a copy.
Good to see you at Netherton Saturday. Love your CD. Good swap. Played it all the way to work - 50 minute journey - and back again. Lovely harmonies, honest lyrics and a professional sound. Have you connections with S. Yorkshire ? - my parents' roots are/ were there. Hasta la vista. Jim
Hello Andy and Catherine, your set was lovely, your voices sound so nice together. I'll tell Terry of his song tomorrow when I see him. Great to "Eyeball" you...lol Barbara x

If we all displayed the passion you have in your eloquent reply to my blog then I believe the "folk scene" will be very much alive and well for a long time to come, as I hope it shall be.
I have intended to post what I feel is a provocative blog. The question "what is folk music?" is one we all have an opinion on and I sincerely thank you for taking the time to reply.
