About DA HEATAZ (S.O.V. & DAKOTA) OF BLACK WORLD ENT.
1998 …. still in high school … Dakota Black … S.O.V … come face to face … two lyrical machines … one battle … the result … the formation of one of the most influential hip hop duos are generation will see. Short bios of both Dakota and SOV…then a transition to the 2 combined are reminiscent of acts like Run-DMC, EPMD, and Public Enemy, who dropped thought-provoking, lyrical jewels over rough melodic beats. They are the Da Heataz.
The hip hop duo was born and raised in Philly. The name Da Heataz was the result of not one, but two of their apartments burning down back when they were roommates. Their sound is a result of their musical philosophy which reflects the creativity they’ve used to make their lives a success, “Don’t close the door on anything. Make songs according to life,” says S.O.V. something that would be an example of this…like they can make a song about being the life of the party and then a song about the trials of street life
Da Heataz emphasize the journey in the music. They excel by showing an average man’s point of view on the ups and downs of life in the inner city. Their beats bring the energy of regional hip hop from the south, the west, New York, and their flow is equally universal – with some of the unique flavor of Philadelphia thrown into the mix. Philadelphia has been their battle and their motivation, with much of their music inspired by their life in Philly.
“We don’t write about ice, money, all that, because that’s not what we have. We write music that anyone can relate to, because we’ve experienced the struggle of trying to get by, do right, and do well”, says Dakota.
