Influences
Nightingale, HotPoint Stringband, The Groovemongers, Swallowtail, The Avant Gardeners, the lovely and talented Peter Barnes, Laurie Fisher, Larry Unger, Skylark, House Red, the contra dance community in Virginia, North Carolina, and all over the East Coast. Thousands of hours fiddling in dusty festival fields, millions of steps and smiles on wooden dance floors. Many a late night dance weekend jam. And that class that Rya took up at Pinewoods with Jeremiah McLane and Nightingale.
Sounds Like
Some say we sound a little like The Groovemongers, a little like Hotpoint, and a lot like ourselves. We take that as a compliment!
FloorPlay is a three-piece contradance band from Charlottesville, VA. Their style is a mix of French Canadian, Old-time, Klezmer, Rags, Swing, and original tunes. This seasoned group of musicians are long-time contra dancers and a caller--what could be finer for dancers? Callers love them. They play for waltzes, swing workshops, parties and weddings too. ..
Hey! Fine tunes emanating from your page! And thanks so much for the kind words! We'd LOVE to come play in Virginia. A couple of us have pesky day jobs that make long-distance gigs a challenge, but who knows? We'll certainly let you know if an eastern trip becomes possible!
Thank you. And from the sound of your snippets here, you share the same eclectic tastes that I have as well. Glad you saw us there...Vonnie from 2 Bits (hammered dulcimer and piano)
Are you guys FAMILY or WHAT?! We are personal friends of "HEY", and a couple of us are personal friends of the folks in "ROUND THE HOUSE". In addition, about six months after our band was born, we did the "Make 'Em Go WOOOO Workshop" with "HOTPOINT STRING BAND" (changed our lives!), we shared a stage for four days at a dance camp in Colorado with "NOTORIUS" last February, and just danced to and jammed with "THE GROOVEMONGERS" at FolkMADNESS Contra Dance Camp here in NM over Memorial Day weekend! We think "Pokey" Hellenberg is the greatest percussionist in Contra (& Eden told me a few weeks ago he is now part of NOTORIUS now, as well!) And we are ALL dancers, too, just like you.
HOWDY, COUSINS!!! Hope your musical lives are as much fun as ours!!! See you at the family reunion some day!
Welcome to MySpace, looks like you just set up a couple of weeks ago. We've found our site to be useful, & even have picked up a good paying gig from one of our "Friends" last fall! Have fun with it!!! (be sure to link to it on your website) It takes a some attending to, but I think it is worth it!

Hey there fellers! Happy to be your friend. Do you ever come through Oklahoma City? Besides playin' for 'em I'm the band getter for the Scissortail Traditional Dance Society contra dances.
