About me: Fierce. Edgy. Unique. These are words that captivate the essence of Keva Johnson, creative head of KEVA by Keva J. They are the bottom line that set her apart from all the rest. On January 4, 1983, Keva was born in Brooklyn, New York. At the tender age of one, her parents relocated the family to Miami, Florida. It was her extreme keenness toward elements of fashion at a young age that introduced to the world the fashionista she is today. Keva's identity flourished during high school and was affirmed through ballots cast for best dressed of her senior class. Following high school graduation, she continued her education at Florida State University majoring in the field of Apparel Design and later acquired a Bachelors of Science of the same concentration.
Still, uncertain about what role exactly she wanted to play in the vast world of fashion, Keva began rigorous design classes with hopes of understanding her true place in the fashion industry. At the approach of her junior year, it was then that Keva decided she wanted to establish her own company-- ambitious to excel she landed an internship with her dream clothing company, Baby Phat, in Los Angeles, California whereby she interned at their designs center for a term. During her apprenticeship, Keva learned the inner relations of creating a substantial clothing line while working with a team of assistant designers and patternmakers. One of her own designs was accepted for production in the Baby Phat line. It was here she acquired a lot of necessary skills to further influence her decision to start her own company. "I want people to see my skills and passion for fashion. I feel like I won't be able to express that working behind any label but my own." Keva passionately expressed.
Fully armed with her B.S in Apparel Design, it was in 2005 that a determined Keva returned home to Miami to pursue her dream in making her name world renown.
Keva began this journey of networking through her many visits to boutiques, fashion shows and other events to handing out business cards. Ultimately making her presence known is key. At the end of one fashion show, she was greeted by Esteban Cortazar who expressed absolute love for her designs giving her work great praise. “ You got it”, were his exact words about her unique designs. This further inspired Keva to create a collection that would take the fashion world 'by storm.'
In March 2006 Project Runway came to Miami inviting contestants to tryout for season 3 of their hit show. Keva awaited with hundreds of other designers anticipating an opportunity on the show. Placing in the first of 23 people who qualified to the next round of Project Runway, she made it to first alternate. While no one dropped out allowing her the chance to be on the show, this only championed her to work all the more harder.
It is said that an innovator creates something new and is always remembered for that trade. The final touches are being made in preparation for her debut fashion show. Keva is prepared to show the world what KEVA J is truly all about.
