DAWN GUN was born Dawn Maldonado on September 2, in Harlem N.Y.C, to a Puerto Rican father and a Black mother. When her mother married her step-dad, the family relocated to California, so Dawn was raised between N.Y. and Cali. Dawn was brought up in a home that was always filled with music. Her grandfather listened to jazz, her grandmother danced and played Salsa y Merengue and her mother listened to R&B. Being influenced by different styles of music, definitely comes across in her music. The constant blasting of hip hop from her father’s car and his turntables created a spark in the heart of this young girl that would never die. Being that she was raised in the projects of Harlem, she had no choice but to be apart of and embrace the culture from which hip hop was born. A true B-girl at heart, Mis.Led got involved in break dancing. Her love for the culture grew and expanded into a love for M.C.ing.
Dawn Gun was very much influenced by classic hip hop and credits that as her foundation. Even though they were not of her generation, she loved the classics from artist like Eric B., Rakim, Salt & Pepa, Run-DMC, EPMD, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante, and of course, MC Lyte. Mis.Led began writing poetry at the tender age of 12. Her talent for writing developed into a talent for writing raps and by age 14 she began recording her own music. She and a friend would write songs and make beats using a kareoke machine and a tape recorder. At that time, the alias Dawn Gun was born. Having multiple meanings, the initial use of the name “Dawn Gun” was to show that Dawn was an extension of the pencil she wrote with and as she got older she maintained her youthful and innocent appearance so many people where often “Mis.Led” by that, not knowing her tongue was the sword and the rhymes she spit cut her opponents down like a knife through butter.
Rhyming was Dawn Gun's passion and something that came natural to her so many people began to take notice. In school she was apart of various crews and she perfected her skills in lunch time battles and freestyle sessions. She had a sound that was all her own, with a bit of old school vibe shining through.
Mis.Led was in the crew “B'neza” in which she recorded and performed with actor/rapper Omar Gooding, and others. Being the only female in the crew, Mis.Led held her own amongst experienced lyricists. From the group Mis.Led linked up with an extraordinary producer by the name of Bubblishiz. Some of her work can be found on two of his compilations, "E-Music" and "Platinum Tongue". When the group separated she began recording and performing with Jon$Doe and together they started Star Quality Ent. Dawn Gun was the first artist and only female rapper. Some of Dawn Gun's work can be found on the Jon$Doe/Chad Mack produced compilations, "Krazy Glue" and "Why You Ain't Put Me On It? Vol. I". As Dawn Gun traveled between N.Y. and Cali, she made time to participate in Harlem Heights Entertainment, a company that her N.Y. friends started. Again she was, and still is, the FIRST and ONLY female in the of the crew. Harlem Heights released the compilation "Once Upon A Time In Harlem" in 2003. But it doesn't stop there. Dawn Gun soon discovered she could also write songs and record in Spanish. She then began trying her hand at that. In 2004, well known producer, DaRock, took Dawn Gun under his wing and recorded many Reggaeton/Spanglish records with her in Spanish and Spanglish.
Today Dawn Gun is still pushing toward her dream and she is taking all the right steps. She is in daily rotation on SwurvRadio.com. She is also receiving air play on Music Choice TV and Sirius Satellite Radio. She has recently teamed up with DJ JiJi Sweet (formerly of 100.3 The Beat), as JiJi has mixed for Dawn Gun in some of her live performances. Her music can also be found on DJ JiJi Sweet’s “King Holiday-Black College Edition”, "New Years Eve at Forbidden City" and "The Official Dub Show" mix tapes. In 2006 she opened for the classic group Black Sheep. In 2007, she was interviewed and performed on MusicPlusTV.com with VJ Ronnie Jr., making history as the first female rapper to ever bless their stage! The Good Fellaz played her bangin' single “Must Be Fly”, produced by Drone One of Dyverse Ent., on 93.5 KDAY. Mis.Led also had the opportunity to travel to many different High schools and Middle Schools with the P.A.C.E. program promoting education through creative expression in 2006-2007. She was 1 of 20 artists chosen, out of 300+ that auditioned, by YoYo to partake in her "Best of the West" showcase in 2007. She was just inducted into the ALL Female hip hop crew “The (Sis)Tem” proving that females can rock together, be dope and get along! And most currently, Dawn Gun’s New Mix Tape “Revenge of the DoorKnockers", hosted by DJ JiJi Sweet, is here and available to you through myspace.com/itsmisled. She is now RELEASING CRAZY HOT SINGLES WORLDWIDE WITH XL PRODUCTIONZ and plans on releasing A full length album through Get It Done Records.
