• Bio

Red Tides are a Manchester based 5 piece alt-folk outfit. After four penniless and productive years together under various guises 2010 has proved to be the most exciting yet. Playing a string of festivals over the summer from Solfest in Cumbria to Kuiperfest in the north of Spain they then released 'Wild Hour' a sublime debut EP. The launch night saw support from Jo Rose and collaboration with artist Zimmy Iredale, creating a hypnotic sensory experience where the movements of the musicians feed into the visuals. November saw Red Tides take position as BBC Introducing's band of the week, being described as Manchester's 'undiscovered gem'. They then featured on the cover CD for December's issue of Music Week magazine. Red Tides crept on to the Manchester music scene four years ago as an experimental Folk duo consisting of singer Molly Macleod and guitarist Sam Alder (Manchester Scenewipe). Not content with the limitations of a duo they began widening their horizons being joined by multi-instrumentalist Matthew Cleghorn and harmony singer Kate Royle. As the venues grew in size percussionist Phillip Howley and bassist Ben Hayward joined providing a sensitive yet powerful rhythm section. The band then played support slots for Subpop's Chad Vangaalen, Vetiver and Women under the name Molly Macleod Band. The band were quickly signed to Manchester indie-label Debt Records. Changing their name to Red Tides in 2009 their sound also started shifting and re-alining , they said goodbye to singer Kate Royle and took a darker more rhythmical route. Introducing new instruments such as saw, viola and dulcimer into the mix. 2011 sees the release of their new single 'Housebound' on January 10th, accompanied by an enchanting music video, produced and edited by Mark Kendrick with animation from Hossein Mirshahi. Following this, their next EP is due for release in March 2011.

"music that sounds like the last day of summer, like shadows creeping across golden fields, like the echoes of a time long past finding their way into modern-day dreams"
Manchester Music

“The languid warmth of their music has a melancholic, Scandanavian element that speaks of windswept landscapes and barren, northern wastelands”
Citylifers

"Whimsical without being twee, Red Tides are as rich and flowing as a breeze across a bursting meadow and every bit as beautiful."
Chris Long, BBC Manchester

"nice and tight, raw and moving" -apparently...
