theFoundation, a funk, hip-hop and soul quartet out of upstate New York, has been burning up clubs and house parties from Yale University to the Brooklyn Academy of Music since 2001. They met in August 2001 at Bard College, where they studied jazz by day, and dug deep into funk by night. Performing as a straight-ahead jazz quartet from time to time, they brought that knowledge to the music they were playing after classes, at house parties and in local clubs. Their diligent practice schedule paid off quickly, as the band secured opening slots with George Clinton and The Slip within 8 months of forming. By drawing inspiration from the likes D'angelo, The Roots, John Coltrane, The Police, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Common, they've cultivated a style that allows them to play 3-hour marathon concerts that veer from neo-soul to gospel funk to underground rap. In the last year they've recorded an album, written commissioned works, and begun touring the american northeast. Presently they are working on material for a mixtape, a stripped down hip-hop/jazz ep and writing songs for a second album.
