Desi's Interests
|
| General | I like all kinds of ethnic food - without restriction. (However, I am a really girlie, supersensitive type, so some of the protein groups are restricted. I can state here CATEGORICALLY that I do not eat sea cucumbers or jelly fish.)
I like art. I don't just mean the capital A Art found in museums, I mean the kind that every day people create. For capital A Art I like Albrecht Duerer, Stephen Crane, Botticelli, Rafael, Alfons Mucha, Gustav Klimt among others. I like art nouveau and fantastic art. Oh, that brings up Frank Frazetta too. Cinematography can reach this level of art. The fight scene between Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman in "Kill Bill" is one of those pieces of cinematography. (Of course, the content there is kind of rough... but it's really beautiful work.)
I like music. You guessed it: I'm eclectic there, too. I pretty much like every genre except rap and some of the heavy opera. But there are exceptions to that, too! I can give some examples of what I like. But I should probably do that in the next section, since MySpace has a space for it!!
I like movies and plays. There's a space for movies below, too. Ditto for books and TV.
I like animals. There is no space for that. I am owned by six cats, one dog, one rabbit and one ferret. I like every kind of mammal - marsupials and birds ain't bad, either. I'm less than thrilled with reptiles. I like snakes, but lizards kind of creep me out - and I want NO PART of feeding one animal to another. I'm a city girl, thanks, and that's way too Wild Kingdom for me! I can't stand bugs - by which I mean any land-based animal lifeform with many legs or no legs at all and lacking a skeleton. The only exception to that are butterflies, moths, lacywings, ladybugs and woolly bears. Ok. I guess pillbugs are not so bad. Anything else in that family - no thanks. I reiterate: I'm a city girl. I think we live indoors to avoid those lifeforms. At least I do!!!
I like amusement parks and fireworks. Combining the two of those is OUTSTANDING! I love roller coasters particularly - the faster the better. (Except those wooden ones are a pin in the neck. Really. Ouch.) I'm not a huge fan of things that just spin me around - I need an elliptical orbit or something. Spinning gives me motion sickness.
| | Music | I like the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Animals, Audioslave, Staind, Josh Groban, Luciano Pavarotti (man, I still get a tear in the eye...), U2, Thrice, Brian Setzer, Mark Antony, Dave Brubeck, Elmore James, Jonny Lang, Dolly Parton... These are not in any kind of order, btw. I basically like everything from Dixieland jazz to zydeco to ska to Gregorian chants to operettas to classic rock to alternative to Christian rock to ... etc. Old, new, mainstream, obscure. I can probably give you a better idea of what I like by telling you what I don't like: Grand Funk Railroad, the Doobie Brothers, Journey, Rush, and most rap. Also, I'm not a big fan of prolonged hoarse screaming, so some bands are right outta here on that basis. | | Movies | My favorite movies are What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I also like O Brother Where Art Thou. Hm. They all have questions as titles!
Of course I like other movies too. I liked the Narnia movie, and I'm looking forward to Prince Caspian. That goes double - no, triple! - for the Lords of the Rings trilogy. The Matrix trilogy. I like Robert Rodriguez' work. Quentin Tarantino's... not as much... (Although I like Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2.) I like the Bourne trilogy.
I like science fiction, intrigue, comedy, action. I do not like vivisection, so I don't watch the torture and mayhem types of movies. I'm a sensitive type. I also don't watch movies or tv shows or read books where I know from the get-go that a child or pet gets injured or killed. I can't take the heartache. I cried over a Futurama episode about Frye's dog. In fact, I woke up the next day and cried about it again. Then, later at work, people noticed I seemed out of sorts... So I told them about this episode and bawled all over again. | | Television | I don't watch a lot of tv. There were really good shows that have been canceled. Dead Like Me was great. So was Titus. When I do watch tv, I like animal shows - but not where animals are getting hurt. I can't take too much of the animal cops type of show because it hurts too much to see abused animals. (Although I admit that there is a certain satisfaction to seeing someone arrested for doing bad things to animals.) | | Books | Everything by Stephen King. There are times when his novels end up just being d*mned strange, but I love them right up to that point. (It comes to mind. What in the H was that all about at the end??? Ew... And why the H would that solve the monster issue???) I like Dick Francis. JRR Tolkien (that goes without saying) and CS Lewis. (But I prefer CS Lewis' writing for children. The stuff for adults is too full of "nameless" this and "indescribable" that...) Michael Crichton - he is fantastic!! | | Heroes | The usual... Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Aquaman... I love a guy in a uniform... Robin Hood... Is it the tights, do you think??
Haha! I'll answer seriously.
President heroes would be Lincoln and Jefferson. In fact, I would totally love it if we voted someone in who had their brains and integrity. We haven't seen anyone in the Oval Office like them for... let me get my calculator out...
There are not too many heroes in the news. Or at least, there aren't too many heroes who capture public attention and then hold it. The public eye turns very quickly to the next scandal or tumultuous event.
Animal heroes. Hm. I can only think of one famous one, the girl gorilla who picked up a little boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at a zoo. Otherwise, there are many, many animal heroes out there who save their owners from harm. There are dolphins who help people, too. I class police dogs in this group, too.
Everyday heroes would be military, police, educators, medical providers, therapists - and any other person who helps someone who can't help himself. Defense of others is the noblest motive and the highest goal.
Personal heroes would be my parents. My Dad for his gregarious nature and expansive, generous heart. Also his brains!! My Mom for her passionate nature and artistic ability.

About me:
Probably the best person to write about me would be someone else entirely! That's not because I'm unfamiliar with the topic, but it's that other people notice things that pass right by me. Point of view is everything.
Of course, I'd rather have someone write about me who LIKES me! That goes without saying.

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who shares interests. I don't imagine anyone is going to share all of my interests. If I wanted to be with a spitting image of myself, I could talk to the mirror. Gee. That's just not that fascinating a prospect...
