About me:
(Xperiment Xempt Xpanse)
The name XXX sounds strange to many people, so I thank you for your curiosity and your time. Some say it contradictory, and although it is not, it is supposed to represent freedom. Sometimes, the same word or thing even has opposing meanings. Similarly, we have “drugs” (used often with negative connotations in reference to illegal drugs, or with a positive spin for the pharmaceutical kind). This ambivalence is omnipresent and is what can leave one slightly disorientated. She reminds of the twin sisters in this riddle: following a path through the desert you come to a fork. One path, to the left, leads further into the desert where you would surely die, the other, to the right, to the nearest village where you must go. At the fork are twin sisters and you know that one always tells the truth, the other always lies. You are allowed one question to either sister, without knowing which is which. What question do you ask? The answer: “What would your sister say is the right direction to the village?” and then do the opposite.
Whether you ask the honest one or the liar the reply would be “to the left”. The fact that lies can be an aide, and may indeed be essential, to the truth is an important recognition. Monsieur Magritte reminded us of this with his painting of a pipe below which the text “This is not a pipe”. We do not seem to differentiate very efficiently between perceived symbols and the things in themselves. Senior Picasso heralded that “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth”. The real freedom appears to urge us to better understand reality by always being aware that in telling the truth, a lie is born simultaneously, and vice versa. Not to represent both would be one-sided and prejudiced.
Evolution demands adaptability, and creativity is as essential to our psyche, as freedom to the man. Independently of this freedom is in search of yet another boundary- between dram and reality, a boundary determinded by the mirror effect. We can go even further interpreting the symbolism and metaphysics. This coincidence made me doubly sure that XXX’s roots are auspicious, and we hope you will enjoy our take on creative culture, as seen in the context of its relation to international urban life.
Cities are on-going pieces of collective art. If you are living within one, then you are only too aware that, like every great piece of art, from the “Mona Lisa” to the Tower of Pisa, from “The Kiss” to the Acropolis, they have their imperfections. Whatever frictions arise out of city life, between its people, or the people and their environment, the Arts manage to heal and soothe, as well as inspire and invigorate. Creativity and the building of harmonious habitats are inextricably linked, and in trying to find solutions to problems, we must often think, or wander and wonder, “ outside the box” . Here creatives play an intrinsic role in shedding new light on problems. Sometimes they uncover parts of ourselves we would rather conceal, even though that’s precisely where a solution lies. If XXX provokes, it is only to gain a better understanding of who we are, and to raise healthy debate about society. With luck, when our tolerance is stretched, it is because we’re growing.
In time, we hope to cover a broad spectrum of work by “ the creative class”- from the individualistic creativity of the artist, to designers of every genre, right through to musicians, performers and dancers. These are the people most likely to impact and influence how we feel about our block, street, neighbourhood, or planet. Hopefully, they help us all be under the spell, and in command, of culture. Sometimes the changes they affect make us feel it’s too fast, sometimes too slow- it can drive you crazy, but it’s worth remembering we’re all crazy. As Steve Jobs (of Apple Computers) told the graduates of Stanford University at their Commencement ceremony – “Stay hungry, and stay foolish”. Hungry, so that you will eat with passion what life will offer or throw at you. Stay foolish, so as not to take yourself too seriously. We must never stop playing, for it is in play that we discover new possibilities.
Amore es dolor. . .?
Born only through beauty,
Not through pain.
I feel the need to fight not in terms of
Violence, but through actions & deeds.
A hunger, a need,
An eagerness to share,
A desire to connect to something more,
Suspended only momentarily.
Actions born through this need to find,
This willingness to explore.
Everyday is a journey, a pathway
Unfolding beneath my feet. . .
Nomadic this may outwardly appear,
Putyat e prekrasen.
