...One could encapsulate their engaging aesthetic as pretty and soulful – yet occasionally deep-throatingly ominous, like Mazzy Star focusing on a ballsy Diamanda Galas LP – with a faint smell of Cat Power slowly drifting through the air.
…a whimsical, slightly operatic Cat Power.
… Liz Phair, Belle & Sebastian, Magnetic Fields, Marianne Faithful, Julie Cruz, Faun Fables
…a demented Tori Amos. Or Tori on mescaline. But your new stuff is much sweeter, less chaotic and more melodic (and even less Tori.)
…Ivory is an incredible one woman band creating sounds and textures that seem to whisper in your ear of her inner thoughts. It is a bit voyeuristic listening to her music like peeking into a diary. And can it be that you only just met her? Haven't you always known her? No mere story can create a bond in so short a time, but music can and her music does.
Reminiscent of early Joni Mitchel and Bjork which are rather different from one another, yet finding intercourse in Ivory's unique style.
Led by Ivory Smith, a sublime singer/songwriter/musician that has been expanding her edgy horizons out on the fun fringes of Seattle’s adventurous music scene for many years (as a solo artist, with the now defunct pop/rock band Bloodbunny, and as part of the acclaimed Foot in Mouth performance-art ensemble, among other well-received projects), Ivory in Ice World kicks out an enchanting pop sound peppered with saavy dashes of accessible eclecticism. It’s Ivory’s dream project -- and the stylish group, along with some fabulous guests, will soon begin work on a debut EP with local luminary Mell Dettmer at the helm. One could encapsulate their engaging aesthetic as pretty and soulful – yet occasionally deep-throatingly ominous, like Mazzy Star focusing on a ballsy Diamanda Galas LP – with a faint smell of Cat Power slowly drifting through the air. In other words, Ivory In Ice World dishes out an intimate and crafty pop-centric strain that’s been finely honed.
