Scharlene is a motivator by nature, an advocator on behalf of abused and neglected children, a member of the International Mentor Association, NAVPLG and the mother of two.
The idea for Girlz In Transition was born on Feb 7th, 2007 when Scharlene decided that she wanted to expand her current business mentoring program for small business owners to include a mentoring program for young girls and boys that would foster self-esteem, allow for genuine self-expression through verbal sharing and creative activity, provide a supportive space for personal growth and that motivated and encouraged youth to share their personal experiences within a safe environment without ridicule or judgment and thus "Girlz In Transition" and "Boyz on the Rise was born".
This program will offer mentoring, tutoring, interactive activities and a live online talk radio show that will all be co-managed by the youth, encouraging them to foster their own creative space and share experiences that are helpful and will be of value to one another through group discussion.
The Girlz In Transition program utilizes the Girls Circle Association model that has been applied to programs in areas such as schools, peer leadership, health education, outdoor adventure, positive youth development, pregnancy prevention boys and girls clubs and scouting groups.
We would like to encourage parents and youth to register to attend our ongoing Open House Events called "circle for a Day" so that you can experience a girl�s circle first hand and decide if this is the right youth group for YOU!

Interested in volunteering?
Do you have an hour or two to make a difference in the life of a young girl or are you an expert in a specific area of interest to girls between the ages of 10 - 23?
We have several programs that need volunteer assistance. If you are not local to the IL area or you are unable to commit to on site mentoring/volunteering you can also volunteer virtually. You choose what you want to do and let us know when you are available to do it: once a week, once a month, or once in a while. Whatever your education, experience or income, there is an opportunity for you.
You can select volunteer opportunities that best match your interests, skills and availability. Please explore our site to learn more about us, and to find out how YOU can have a positive impact and influence on the young women of today!
Volunteers who have been with us 3 months or more are eligible for letters of reference if needed.
